I seen it in at brize on friday and they did a practice of what there going to be doing at the up and coming air shows and i think you'll be happy with it
just if you taking any kids with you have some ear defenders at the ready for them
Enjoy yourself and let me know what you think when you get back

The vulcan flew into my work (Lyneham) on the 14th, was supposed to land at brize but there was an incident there so had to come here instead!
My Mate's dad works on the Visiting Aircraft Section, so we had a good poke round it today, even went inside up on the crew deck, you wouldn't beleive how cramped it is! Had a long chat with one of the engineers, he says it costs almost 2 million a year just to keep it going!
Its leaving here today at approx midday, so any spotters in the area get your binoculars ready

the one xrmarlin is talking about is the one i see at bruntingthorpe,
was there the first time it had flown in years after the restoration !
what a awsome awsome plane, the day will stick with me forever
first went out in andy g's focus and he was showing me how to drift a 650hp 4x4 focus with no seatbelt on lol
then as we were about to leave we were told this was gonna fly so we had the day off completely to watch it go !
free food and drinks made it good too lol
it flew straight over my head ! amazing

It did have afew engine issues but they got them sorted then when they were going through the pre-flight checks the out board elevons wouldnt move freely enough to make it safe to fly.
The engineers worked flat out trying to get it sorted but it was traced to a dodgy hydraulic unit in the bomb bay and we wasnt able to get the spares they needed to them in time.
She's all fixed now though

Dont hold me to this but she's due to leave for waddington on friday at lunch time but obviously i cant say for deffinate if it will as air craft are always subject to checks and possible breakages which i hope it doesnt otherwise ive got a mad dash across the country to get the spares to it lol

In a way yes im a trained engineer but technically im not supost to work on the plane un-supervised even though i can do the jobs ive not got that special bit of paper that says i can work on air-crafts.
Most of the time i service the ground/ hanger equipment and generally get everything ready for when it fly's out to shows but if a job comes up that they need an extra pair of hands for on the plane i alway nominate myself.
Theres not a cubby hole on that plane ive not been in as im quiet short i used to get stuffed up in every small hole a normal sized person would struggle with when they were doing the resto on it thankfully theres not so much of that these days lol

I know they were having afew issue's but i cant say exactly as im not that knowledgeable on the engines all though they called up a couple of fuel filters when the engineers got back to brunters so it could of had a dodgy 1 or the 1's that were in reached the end of there shelf life.
I dont know if you seen it display before when it was owned by the raf but we have to be abit more careful with the air frame as we dont have an unlimited supply of spare so theres certain moves the pilots have been told not to perform maybe they were just playing it safe.
Ill try and find out tomorrow for you

Yes fella, she's still there ( have a looksy on google map at southend airport ! ). They open her up on the main runway (she's not air worthy yet ) and i can here it from my gaff 3 miles away as if the big twunt is parked outside in the cul-de-sac !
She is a beauty, some serious craftsmanship went into building it.
just watching it take off in THIS VIDEO makes me smile from ear to ear

They've been doing the one at southend for years, it used to be just dumped over the back of the airport looking sorry for itself. I think they are having trouble with funding for it, although after reading the cost for a take off / patern loop / landing i'm not surprised !
I'd love to see the one at southend take off, i'd stand at the end of the runway !

The differant numbers were call sign's from when they were in service3 with the raf.
The one down at southend still does ground runs and fast taxi's but it will never be able to take off again as the air frames past its flying hours although ours still looks the same these has been alot of strengthening work carried out over the restoration.
Also due to the CAA's regulations there needs to be certain amount of regulations up-held which southend hasnt got the facilities for, like for instance if we need to change a washer for one reason or another we have to be able to trace said washers life all the way back to what batch of steel it was made from.

Plus as mentioned above theres so many rules and regs we have to follow to get her up in the air it just wouldnt be feasable to get another 1 in the air most of the precudures (sp)we follow have been fine tuned for 8 years to keep in line with CAA regs one slip up and she can be grounded.

All that is, is basicly a registration number. ( that's how i understand it anyway )
otherwise they'd be in the tower saying.. oiyt.. no, not you, him, no not him.. him... etc etc

They're an awesome aircraft, when I was working at Woodford I was involved in the restoration work being carried out on XM603 based there. One of the best/most interesting jobs was to crawl down the intakes and turn the engines by hand to keep them moving, it was a strange place to be sat in the scary end of an olympus jet engine and realising that although it was impossible, if it did start there wouldnt be much of me left.
The party in charge of the maintenance and restoration of XM603 did get it to the point of being able to do ground runs and I can confirm that having stood 30 feet from it on a 30% power run it is mentally loud! The last time I worked on it we managed to tow it to the apron and back to it's stand successfully moving it for the first time in 10 years and they were planning on being able to do taxi runs but I've not heard any more since. Unfortunately the woodford one is another that'll never fly and with the site heading towards being a housing development the future prospects of the aircraft itself are a bit bleak

Ive also worked on the one up at woodford a couple of years ago in the middle of winter that place gets bloody cold on the airfeild i dont want to alarm people but last i heard it was going to be cut up and weighed in once the developers had sorted out there planning aplication.
Thats why we were up there taking off as many serviceable parts that we could use on our aircraft aswell as parts to keep other ones able to do ground runs i think the engines went or were goin down to southend and the one up at sunderland had loads of bits aswell.

What a great plane for its day!
Here's a pic that might be of some interest....
This is the vulcan at Sunderland Air Museum, its in a bit of a state as its left open to the elements all the time.
Thanks
