The Vulcan has just been confirmed for Lowestoft Air Show, I'm thinking about going just to see it. Last saw it in the late 80's. Awesome sight.

Its deffinatly worth the watch christian i think from memory lowestoft's the last display its doing that day so she'll be light on fuel so they can give it abit more throttle and you'll really hear the engines howling

I did some wiring in the flight deck of the one at southend and was allowed to press the button to open the bomb bay doors. Normally at southend airshow u can go up into the flight deck for a small fee. It use to taxi up and down the runway aswell but it will never fly cause the engines need to be overhauled at a cost around £10m.

Me and the missus went to Duxford to the Flying Legends show on Saturday and I poked around two of my favourite planes - the prototype Concorde, and the Vulcan - I was overcome by their immenseness Shame the Harrier was hanging from the ceiling, would've loved a look around that. The B52 was proper large too!

And I'll just add: 7 Spitfires idling and taking off was a phenomenally emotional moment.

when is it next on ? I love the sound of spitfires

A few years back the had a couple over lake winderemere with a big bomber & a hurricane. The sound of the engines made the hair on the back of your neck stand up. So 7 would be amazing

They are helping sort of by letting us hangar up at lyneham over the winter for the service at a cheap rate in all fairness there helping out as much as they can with lending us kit and what not when we need it but theres only so much they can do.
Hopefully we can pull it off otherwise im going to be looking for another job come the end of the month

i think its about time the RAF extended its historic flight to include the vulcan really.

After all the navy historic flight trys to cover all era's where as the RAF only have the Battle of Britain era at present.

It would be good for the RAF to take it on but the shear cost of runing it through the year as weve found out puts them off in saying that though if we get the money this time around it will be the last time we have to do a big winter service, due to how many flying hours weve clocked up last year weve had to bring forward some front spar mods that we shouldnt of had to do untill next year thats why the total we need is more than at first thought

Pictures above taken on July 3rd 2009 at Waddington arrivals day. Unfortunately she didn't fly that weekend due to technical problems. Fortunately managed to see her later on that month at Lowestoft. The last picture is the gate guard at Waddington which is purely a static and as far as i'm aware doesn't run.

Have some other fantastic pictures of XH558 taken last year flying in formation with the Blades aerobatic display team over Sywell airfield (Northants), unfortunately i haven't downloaded them from the camera yet but when i do i will post them into this thread.

Further pics as promised on my last post of the Vulcan flying with the Blades aerobatic team over Sywell Aerodrome:

The 4 smaller planes (Extra 300 stunt planes) give you some idea of the size of the Vulcan.

im sure its faaarrr cheaper to keep a modernish jet bomber airworthy than a wwII lancaster, spitfires etc etc.

especially considering variants of the powerplant and various elements of the structure and systems are still used today!!

it is one of the key weapon systems that kept us safe in the cold war, and also in technological terms its a massive achievement. Also has a record for the longest bombing mission in history in the Falklands.

It is in one of the hangars at RAF Lyneham now, the RAF has decided to allow the team to use the facilitys ...

Had a good chat the other day to the senior engineer, very interesting guy and highly qualified... Had a good look around the bomber as well, way way ahead of it's time, just shows how good British engineering and manufacturing can be when people have the bollocks to put the money into it ...

It's quite nice just being able to drive across the airfield to go and have a nosy round when we fancy it

Its just a shame they never put the TSR2 into production. Could you imagine having both of them doing a flypast at an airshow?? both the peak of thier game when concieved!

The cold war technology has largely been completely forgotten which is a massive shame!

I was in the hangar having a poke about the other day too. I sat in the cockpit a few months back when it first came to lyneham, sure is an impressive bit of kit

You have to have seen one fly to understand really. I'm defo not a plane anorak, but the Vulcan is epic. It is fucking huge and fucking loud for starters.

That and the SR71 Blackbird are planes that I am lucky enough to have seen do low altitude fly-bys.

You say a modern jet bomber but dont forget the vulcan mk1's were designed in the 40's and built in the 50's there is only 11 years between the first flights of a lancaster and the vulcan.
The older ww2 stuff was all made on a tight budget so were made as simple as possible so they could keep churning them out so there isnt a great deal that can go wrong where as the vulcan was built using state of the art materials, technoligy and build processes at the time thus meaning theres more to go wrong and when it does go wrong its usually expensive

P.s rich ive seen the focus parked up on the base when ive been making my way upto the workshops and it looks bloody low lol
