I would say the rs4 is more aimed at the m3 rather than the rs6, 350z also a good comparison, the rx8 also got put in road tests with them but the rx8 is a fair bit slower but also a lot cheaper, and you cant help but look at evo's and impreza's if your thinking about the e46 m3 price range

should imagine any of these are bmw killers and the old ones are dirt cheap in comparison,if you spent the remainder of the funds against a e46 m3 on a S2 quattro you would have a 500-600bhp 4WD porsche eating monster,for less money and including your insurance premium up front.
IMO new new cars are poorly made,based on the emphasism of cost cutting and fuel efficiency,and they look cheap and tacky on the inside,you can have far more of a car for a lot less money if youre willing to comprimise and not have to drive on the new 09 plate to compete with the joneses,boss or whoever.

The Merc C32/C55AMG and Audi S4 have been tested against the E46 M3.
IIRC the Audi S4 was quicker around the Top Gear track than the M3 and the Mercs quicker in a straight line.

As fast to 100 as the fastest time I've seen for a Lotus Carlton ( I seem to remember that someone (maybe JJdeCox75 ) bought one )
The C63 AMG has taken over the baton now, also got the old v8 RS4 ( no longer made ) and the Lexus IS-F

all my facts come from a stretch of road private of course lol
where my mates 330 could reach the same speed as his m3 dont get me wrong the m3 on open road pissed all over the 330
