What is the best petrol and what do you use?
I mainly use Shell V-power, one - because I have heard it is the best and two - because i have a shell card!
I also have used Tesco ultra or what ever it is called, the 99 octane one and this seems to be just as good as the shell!
I have heard that Bp ultimate is spoze to be good and that is what ford recoment with all new cars now isnt it?
What are your views?

Shell V-power is said to have the highest octane rating (tested independently) at the pump but use what ever fuel your car is mapped to.
I use Tesco 99 because of the Clubcard points

Team HOTHOT!
V-Power was the only fuel I ever used in the Cossie - when out at the 'Ring, I used their super high octane stuff (I think it was 102 ron at the station in Adenau) - the engine seemed to love it
Now tho, I just use regular Shell in the 540i - again, I have a shell card - V-power club member too from my cossie owning days
In the escort - anything remotely diesel like that burns LOL

There's been a few comparative tests between the different 'Super Unleaded' makes in EVO mag and also Fast Ford ( or Performance Ford ) mag.
They've used different test mules on each occasion and the results have varied as to what gave the most power on straight dyno figures and also on what the car 'felt' best with.
Tesco 99 has done well in one test, V-power did best in another, BP Ultimate made the car feel very responsive etc.......
So it would seem hard to say definitively for your particular engine - if you have access to a dyno rig you'd probably get slightly different results to what EVO got with their Mk5 Golf Gti and Fast Ford got with the Focus ST(?)

Have a look at this test - everyone of these tests I've seen has used a different car and come up with slightly different results

sorry for the dumb question but is it actually bad to use 95 in a turbo? Is there much difference between 95 and 97 etc?
also would it matter much if you went from v power one day to bp ultimate a few days later and so on?

Depends on how close to the limits the car is set up. I always encourage people to bring their car in for mapping on the worst fuel they are likely to run, so if they can't always get V-Power and sometimes use BP Ultimate, I get them to have it mapped for Ultimate.
Forgetting scientific tests and so on, we absolutely positively see higher knock readings from BP Ultimate than we do from V-Power. I wouldn't put it in mine now at all and I used to swear by it.

i used to use Optimax all the while a few years ago in my last Track day S2. Now ive got the Primera trackcar, any old shit will do, cheaper the better! Current prefered tipple is Sainsburys finest 95ron!
I know of some people who ran the BP Ultimate diesel in fabia tdi VRS and they all said it smoked less than normal derv.

Remember guy,s these higher octaine fuels, loose the rating by a couple of point,if the petrol sits in your tank for a few weeks,so your 99ron becomes 97/96ish ron,and always use a busy petrol station,as the same thing happens in there tanks,if it sits to long

Over here, BP Ultimate and Mobil 8000 are ranked number 1 with Shell V Power and Caltex Vortex lower down. We used to get V Power Racing at some pumps which was 100 RON but that was phased out late last year sadly.
I work in the fuel industry here and it is quite interesting how the info is opposite to the UK as my cossie there lived on V Power.

my stage 3 saff didnt like BP ultimate, in fact it felt less responsive and not as quick
i always used V power or at worst the tesco 99 Ron rated stuff
but nearly always it was V power
i wouldnt put anything less than 97 RON rated fuel in a cossie, but as said dont leave it sitting in your tank as it will lose potency.

If you've got a CSL and have read the test above .......
....you'd have to plump for Tesco on the basis most people seem to rate V-Power higher
than BP Ultimate ( non 102 )
Might be different results in your car though.............
In simple terms, Shells V Power is near identical to the Optimax product that it replaced, in power and feel terms it continued to out perform all 95 octane fuels and wed still recommend owners of all performance cars use the highest quality fuel they can find. However the performance offered by the fuel was sometimes inconsistent.
The Tesco 99 fuel again outperformed V Power in all the tests but the differences between the two fuels were marginal and we doubt most people would tell the difference in their cars on a day to day basis. However the Tesco fuel was the most consistent

Slightly off topic, but waht is best on a lesser tuned engine like my 1.8t in my Passat? I always use standard unleaded, whould i really reap any reward from going for tesco super as I always fill up at tesco

Does it say anything on your filler cap/in your handbook about allowable values like up to 97/98 octane? If so your engine management might have adaptive knock control that can advance the ignition etc depending on info from knock sensors.
Stu MSD will know loads more than most on this but AFAIK the only way your car can tell what octane rating you've put in is by trying to feedback info from the knock sensors ( or other detonation sensors ) and depending on that altering the igniton system to advance it until it receives info telling it to stop/retard it from the knock sensors. Modern systems might be more intelligent perhaps but I'm sure that's how it used to work.
Your car will expect a minimum level of octane/whatever..............and then might have the ECU capacity to react positively to higher octane to take advantage.
Some older cars didn't have the capacity to do it automatically so you had to "set them up" to take advantage
It mentions 98 octane on my BMs filler cap and as I understand it the ECU will adapt up to that ( not sure if it would make full advantage of 102 though )

I agree with Alan, i used to use optimax back in the UK but here Ultimate seems to get better results, plus the Ute is mapped on it aswell.
Never tried the 8000, might have to give it a go if i run low and not near a BP
