Default 3 dr Cosworth alloys - locks

I have a set of brand new, never used locks but today when I tried fitting the wheel centres for the first time I found it impossible to turn the key to lock them in.

The wheels were refurbished some years ago so it's possible that the coating has been done too thickly, but anyone have any other ideas?

I just love the wheels, and they only recently went on the car after being stored for years but I won't run without the centres and don't want to run the risk of being stranded somewhere if I can't get them off.

Washing up liquid let me get the centres in, but the key felt it would bend before the locks would turn.
