I received an item that I won on ebay yesterday.

I paid £2.50 for the postage, but it was only posted 1st Class costing 28p.

I think this is taking the piss a bit, so should I leave the guy negative feedback.

The item is exactly as I expected, it's just the postage cost that's annoyed me!

i think to be honest most people over charge on the postage, it's up to the bidder really to check the cost of postage and if you don't like it then don't bid. if the item is as you expected then you should leave positive feedback.

ebay tried to clamp down on it by making you list HOW its gonna be posted (ie by courier, which courier, which method etc. etc. so buyers can check up on if sellers are rippin em off...

i put £5 on all my items unless they were big i never increaed it.

it takes MY time to send it so they should pay, whether it cost 50p or £5

i voted no. you can see how much it will cost to post, so you take account of that with how much you bid.

if somethings worth a tenner to you, and the postage is gonna be a fiver, don't bid more than a fiver. simple.

and as spiky says, it's not just about the postage cost, it also takes time.

You knew it was £2.50 postage.

Don't forget he's got to buy the box for it to go in, the bubble wrap, the selotape. The petrol to go to the post office......

i always charge high postage but if your not happy with it dont bid on it imo bubble wrap boxes tape all costs ebay would of shown you how much postage before you bid if you wasnt happy paying that amount why bid

I charged someone £5 on an item a while ago.......... item sold for £1 and cost me £6.09 postage...... work that out.......lol

+ feedback all the way, if I fell the postage is too high I won't bid unless its a 1 off thing I really want

Dont forget EBAY charge you for listing the item and then if using paypal they charge you too ! so whatever an item gets sold for isnt what the seller ends up with its actually less

when i first started on ebay i only charged the exact amount but like said above you can end up being out of pocket sometimes.

if your really bothered leave a neutral or email the guy with your concern

I can see your point/s but he spent 30p max on an envelope, 28p on postage and a few seconds chucking the items in the envelope. Yes it took a bit of time to go and post the item, but I still think it's wrong.

When I sell stuff the postage I put is basically the postage it costs.

I was prepared to pay £2.50 for postage, but I expected at least recorded delivery for that.

I know you have to pay to advertise on ebay and to use PayPal but that's his decision not mine, why should I subsidise his PayPal fees? He's the seller I'm the buyer, you guys seem to be seeing it from a sellers point of view.

And the guy hasn't even left me any feedback and I paid up within minutes of the auction ending!

I as the buyer have fulfilled my obligation by purchasing the item, the feedback I receive as a buyer should have nothing to do with the feedback I leave. That's just out of order.

I've acted 100% correctly as a buyer, there's nothing more for me to do so he should leave me positive feedback as soon as I've paid.

Your way leaves you with all the cards.

I do my best to only ever charge the cost of P&P. The worst lot are the computer parts people - £10 to post a motherboard is a f***in joke!

Can't leave neg feedback but neutral is entirely justified imvho, unless the auction details explain why he's charged so much.

Also worth checking that it was advertised as first class postage - if it was advertised as, say, recorded, etc, then negative feedback all the way as it's not properly described.

eBay should force you to enter the package weight and postage type and calculate postage costs plus a %age or fixed amount per weight band instead of allowing sellers to say how much postage is.

I've just checked and it actually states 1st Class Standard, but the charge was stated as £2.95 and not £2.50 as I originally thought it was.

I think ebay should make it a rule that sellers should leave feedback first, there should be no option to leave the seller feedback until the buyer has received theirs!

For me to post something:

50p to Park in Saunsbury's Car park (cheapest)
£2 min. in petrol to drive to town and back
£1.00 for a box from the post office.
£1.00 for some bubble wrap
£0.75p for a roll of sellotape
£0.28p for the stamp

Now thats more than 2.95 postage and packing!

Thats nothing to do with ebay fees.

Is it the buyers fault you live so far from the Post Office? No
Is it the buyers fault you buy expensive boxes? No
Is it the buyers fault you have to pay to park in Sainsbury's? No
Do you use a roll of sellotape per parcel? No
Do you use all your bubble wrap per parcel? No

Maybe you should wait until you have more than one item to post and then you can split the cost of petrol, parking etc over all the parcels!

My parcel arrived in a padded envelope with a 28p stamp on it. No sellotape, no bubble wrap, no box!

I hope he had to drive 500 miles to the nearest post office in a big old van (Uses lots of petrol) and that he got a parking ticket whilst he was there!

As a buyer I leave feedback as soon as the item is received as described.

As a seller I expect other buyers to leave me feedback as soon as they have received my item and are happy with it.

Feedback is more important to sellers in my opinion so you don't get any from me as a seller until I've received some from you.

If I took the same stance when I buy things then that would be unfair but as soon as I receive the item I leave feedback.

Because the BUYER has already fulfilled their obligation to you. They have kept their end of the bargain and you should give them appropriate feedback.

The buyer cannot not give the seller feed back until they have received the item and are happy with it.

The seller can give feedback as soon as payment is received/cleared. Which is what you should do, not wait until you've been given positive feedback. Then it's like "Tit for Tat" or "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours"!!!

Jon, if it costs you that much to post something then fine, as long as your advert explains that - buyers are perfectly entitled to feel unfairly treated if they can't see the reasons behind costs being so high.

I know sellers aren't obliged to explain their cost breakdowns, but sometimes (e.g. when selling on ebay) it's good customer service to go the extra mile to explain these things.

I got a positive feedback but with a quote in it saying that he was annoyed at being over charged for the p&p (because I charged £5 postage and it cost me £3 to send the package - not including the cost of packaging and my time to post the damn thing in a post office!) - I felt like tearing the scrote's eyeballs out and feeding them to my cat to be honest but I let it slide!

I think you should lighten up mate - if you were to give him a negative feedback (which I think is unfair as it's the unwritten rule on eBay that the postage overprice is to cover the fees of setting up the auction) then I think you've completely missed the point of eBay.
