As you know i got my turbo in the car but no boost
no smoke from turbo, definitely getting oil and draining oil. No intercooler on it at the moment as i havn't got the piping for it ..
Id idles abover 1k though which is a bit high. It also doesn't boost at all but if i rev it to over 4.5k and change gear i can hear the turbo.
Any ideas?

woudl the slightest leak on the exhaust manifold to turbo make that much of a difference as i havn't got a gasket for it yet?
wankey taxi lol, ah well i'd be lucky if a boost pipe flew off

it's a possibility...
i can move the actuator rod by hand and let it spring back in and i can hear something close (i.e. have contact with metal) so i'm guessing it isn't stuck open?! ... but.. should it be possible to to move the rod by hand or is it goosed?

You dont need a gasket for the turbo to manifold.
Check how long the actuator arm is or is it attached,
Are the hoses all connected , you havent got a split in one have you..
I had that overtaking boost guage showing 10psi then nothing, fuck all

don't think i have any leaks in any hoses but i'll give them a check.. it probably is the actuator though as i tried moving my friends by hand but couldn't!

i take that means that the actuator will move at minimal boost and open the wastegate?

erm well it doesn't just move, i do need to apply a fair amount of pressure but can still do it with my hand without tooooooo much of a difficulty!
hmm

Possibly sounds like it should be strong enough to allow some level of boost to form.
Have you got a boost gauge plumbed up? - Does it read anything at all ?

no boost guage as of yet (i really need one )
I can't feel any extra pull though so i doubt if it's boosting at all! Would it be advisable to screw the rod right in and see if it starts boosting a bit or would i be asking for trouble

cant hurt to try it i s'pose...
slight leak on manifold shouldnt cause no boost... big leak will
can you hear the turbo spinning up and a constant hissing noise?
what actuator do you have, standard one?
also i asusme its piped in straight off the compressor housing?
if so you should see about 3psi with the correct preload... even less with the actuator a bit worn or set incorrectly... lol
go out and buy a boost gauge asap... even a tim one! lol
if you unclip the actuator rod from the wastegate penny the hole in the rod should cover HALF of the thing it clips into (hard to explain but its obvious when you look at it) if yours is too long... itll boost very low... too short and itll boost too much...
it should be set to cover half (hence the term half hole preload )
also you'll want a bleed valve on there if youre using a standard actuator... as you wont be able to hit more than about 4psi without one... lol

i struggle to move my actuator it should be really tight/strong turbo in the sierra should i be watching my back m8 oh and buy a bleed valve that should help determine boost a bit easier if u no what i mean

well sounds like a new actuator it is! meh, always sommit!
I'll need to get a boost guage asap as you said jim, i've got a schematic to make up a Air/Fuel meter so i'll get that going tomorrow i should think.
I'll see if i can get some boost first before i get the bleed valve, i'd be happy with 4psi
Rab - I don't think you'll need to watch your back lol, unless my brakes don't work
Ah i'll get it sorted over the weekend hopefully, cheers!

yup standard compression. I think someone is running about 9psi lol, but he has a big intercooler, oil cooler etc and probably a good bit of tuning.
Anymore than that and i can see it melting/breaking a few things

just make sure you check that preload before you go out and buy another one...
youll be a bit gutted if you buy one and theres nothing wrong with the std one... lol
i wouldnt expect you to notice much of a performance difference with 2-3psi so it MAY be boosting and you just dont notice it... lol
have you got a dumpvalve fitted? does it go tish? lol

lmao Jim, nah i don't have a dumpvalve fitted, urgh!
Like you say at the top of the rev range on full throttle it must be boosting a little bit as i can hear the turbo making a noise when i change gear. when i say noise, it's not a chatter, just a kind of whine?!
I'll check the preload today mate, just going out in 10 mins to set about it!

oh and if you dont have a bleed valve, just use a T peice on the line from turbo to actuator... and let the T peice vent to air...
that should give you about 7-8psi i'd have thought...
dont leave it like this tho, just incase its running lean/detting

get it set up right on the preload, you want to run only about 4psi with no intercooler otherwise it is piston melt down
i have had the standard engine at 13 psi for about 5 minutes but clutch was stinking as couldn't cope with it
if u want a helping hand getting it set up right, i know a few good tricks on the standard ecu that makes it run even better when turbo as mines is done this way

jase, depends on actuator and actuator preload used...
and if you're hitting 11psi without a bleed valve then i'm 90% sure you're using a -31 actuator on yours
dont think you could get a std actuator to hit that even if you wound it RIGHT in

right well i havn't had any spare to time to tinker with it yet but i quickly pulled off the vacuum/pressure feed to the actuator and it appears to be boosting as i can fell it, and i can hear the turbo do it's feeble whining when i change gear at about 3k or so (don't want to damage me engine ) ... so i presume that it MUST be the actuator?
I've tried adjusting the actuator rod in a good bit but that didn't work, only works when i disconnect the pressure feed.
Can these actuators be repaired, or once they're gone they're gone?! It'd cost me more for a new actuator than it did for the whole setup!

yup, currently asking about for one mate, but the last thing i wanna do is spend £70 - £80 on the car just now, but if i have to i have to, i'm just tight lol.
