well put the car back together properly tonight, i.e. Intercooler piping etc.

Had a loan of my mates dump valve to make sure i was acutally boosting so i went out for a blast..

1. No boost, Nothing! (Disconnected vacuum to dump valve)
2. Boosting quite a bit a nice pull!!
3. Blocked off recirculating valve on turbo (No Boost again!)
4. Unblocked the recirculating valve and blocked off dump valve completely

Turbo is spinning up but no boost! dunno why it stopped really as it's now the same as it was on (2.) i.e. dump valve vacuum disconneced and recirculating valve unblocked.

can you hear a HISSING?

boost hose popped off somewhere perhaps? (thats where my money's at

you wouldnt notice it really on a twincam as it'd just drive like a normal car if one's come off

get someone to rev the engine (need to hold foot to floor for a second really,to get boost, more than justa BLIP) and listen in the enginebay for obviousl leaks

aye't!

nah i'll get it all sorted soon enough, the problem is getting stuff welded and most garages around me are always too busy or just too expensive (i.e £70 - £100 to weld two pipes together)

get my welder either this weekend or next so i'll be getting stuff done once i get some practice in

bugging me!

can't get no more boost no matter what i do, i must be getting a few psi but not that much as i was getting before!

why would it work one minute then not work the next basically? no foreign objecs got into the compressor, there's no air leaks in the boost piping as far as i can see/hear. There's no oil or anything in the boost piping either.. er... i can still hear the turbo spool up at around 2.5k to 3k and produce minimal boost?!

If the wastgate housing had cracked would i be correct in sayin' that it would take longer to spool up rather than producing less boost from 2.5k?!

my vacuum hoses seem to be ok but i havn't fully checked.

the thing is it seems to boost a little and work ok in that sense, then maybe a few minutes later when i try again the engine will struggle to pick up revs even below 2.5k?!?!

most wastegate housings are cracked on most turbos you see... lol

even if yours was crcked i doubt you could even notice, it'd have to be a HUUUUGE crack to even be noticeable really

aye i read that on www.max-boost.co.uk as i was looking for possible causes and ideas/tips.

i would have a look but i can't be fooked whipping the thing out as it's a pain in the titties

i've ran outta ideas apart from the fact that my turbo might not be worth a fook.

aye well even if i disconnect that Jim (well, disconnect the pressure feed) it doesn't boost much... that's how i have it just now

still need one but i want to make sure i don't need a new turbo beforehand...

btw, i just need to disconnect the pressure feed and not the rod right? to disable the wastegate basically.

Disconnect the feed pipe, but don't floor it for all it's worth

probablt the turbo as i can't for the life of me see any leaks, oil, or anything, minimal play on shaft and blades look ok too! it's got a mind of it's own the lazy old bugger

there are loooads of tests to do... all of them need a boost gauge

if your actuator is shot, then even disconnecting the pressure feed wont do much, as the spring's too weak to hold the wastegate closed

(wastegate open= gasses bypass the turbo blades and no boost)

Ah well i've got major blue smoke coming from the exhaust, basically after i give it some or after a continuously 60mph drive for say 10mins or whatever...

i'm thinking it could be the oil return as it is gravity feed, but only slightly (turbo is sitting pretty low) or it could be the turbo oil seals.. it smokes bad when i come down to an idle and when driving and can't see any smoke but i've been told there's a mild blue mist.

So...

I'm gonna whip it out and wait til i get my welder to make up a poper manifold, get a new turbo as my actuator is goosed anyway, and get an A/F meter and a boost guage and start again!

Well it's been an informative week or so to say the least, not really disappointed as i didn't have any major expectations, i just like a project, even if it is bodged

How much you talking for a T25 from Ebay or the likes, about £40 - £60 ?

don't bother with the AFR gauge seriously...

anything affordable is USELESS to you, seriously!

just take it down the local tuners

havn't taken the turbo out yet so i got a boost guage today, nothing special but i know it works

anyway i can hear the turbo spool up but there's no boost at all!! I've disconnected vaccum/pressure to actuator, connected re-circ pressure feed and held the actuator rod back to prevent it from moving but no boost.

so aye, i must have an air leak or the turbo must be fooked?

it's coming oot soon anyway for a 'proper' job.

put the boost gauge in the feed from the compressor housing... the nippe that comes off the snail bit (that goes to the actuator) see if it registers anything there

good idea jim! i'll go try that in 5 mins once my dog stops crapping itself coz of the thunder

well i don't have a nipple on the compressor housing, as far as i know i have a recirculating dump valve thingy, but i presume that'll do.
