few choices depends how far you wanna go.........
1) damp proof paint - works but just covers the problem
2) take all plaster off to 1 metre high (rising damp only tracks up 1 metre from ground level usually) and replaster using a waterproofer mixed in)
3) Take plaster off as above, drill 10mm holes every 6 inch in motar joints and fill with damp proofing compound (holes to be 1st coarse abouve ground level inside) then follow as per No2

erm, i was told it seals it, the problem is if its not actually rising damp,
mine was more leaky tap, did seal it though , also wehn i told her old man he was round that night and done a proper job
painted the front room the following day
fooking pure brilliant white and then he painted the hall way the same colour, the staircase, the kitchen, bathroom, and the fooking toilet
ALL PURE BRILLIENT WHITE, NEVER LET INLAWS DO YOU ANY FAVOURS
i actually phoned him to knock a fucking hole in the wall for my fiosh tank, was explaining all the work i done and he done that
you wait till i house sit his ficking dogs, im painting his house orange
OH THE OUTSIDE TOO

Steve spirit is liquid damp proofer which is pressure injected into brick work and is soooooooooooooooooooo old school and carrys loads and loads of problems. The new style which isnt readily available is paste which is peice off piss to do
rising damp will only tract up a wall around 1METRE, damp in corners of rooms etc is poor air circulation and the moisture is stuck in the corners with stagnent air, other damp is either pourous outter leaf which is tracking across wall ties or a leave usually

if you own your house and its bare brick , you might want to consider using an aluminium stirate to seal the outside .
as has allready been mentioned , the cheapest way to replace or repair a non functional dpc is to inject silicone every 5-9 inches 1 brick course above external ground level .
one thing to remember is a damaged damp course can cause rising damp BUT rising damp will only climb 3ft (1 metre) above floor level .
the usual cause of dampness in a house is water ingress , it can enter under window sills , gutters small cracks and once a flow path has been created , the damage can appear anywhere .
i once spent a day tracing a flow path 170 feet round a house from a broken hopper box in the rear garden down to the front door where the dampness was showing .

Thanks guys - I guess I'll get someone in to tell me exactly what it is, and then come and see you to find out what to do
This is just a small extension on the back of our house, and is showing a bit of black here and there. It all needs re-plastering anyway, as it used to be the kitchen, so we should be able to sort it all in one go I guess
