Default uk scooby pinking

I have just bought a standard 1999 impreza turbo uk spec and it pinks under load and i do not know what would cause this. its running .6 of a bar of boost. also run only on super unleaded. any ideas would be gratefully received.

as it's a 99 I'd try MAF sensor (as they are almost consuables on that year)

If you replace it though make sure you reset the ECU.

I'd leave the battery unplugged for a few hours, you can do it with the plugs under the dashboard too have a look here for that method http://www.jollygreenmonster.com/ecu.asp.htm

You can try a quick check on the MAF (which isn't fool proof but has worked on cars I've worked on)

While the car is up to temp and idling, pull the electrical connector plug to the MAF sensor off, the car should cut out. If it just carries on idling it's supposed to signify a MAF fault as the ECU apparantly learns to sort of bypass the MAF when it's faulty (which is why you need an ECU reset after fitting a new one as your fault may persist)

If you do suspect a MAF fault (and remember they don't show up on the dash fault code light when checking like that) then one can be bought for Ł80 new, never buy a 2nd hand one as they brought out a revised one and if it's 2nd hand it'll prob be buggered too anyway.
