Default pinking / detonating etc ????

Hi,

Are pinking and detonation the same thing Can someone explain what they mean and if there the same or not ? the reason I ask is that when I went for a set up on the rolling road the operator said it was detonating at high revs

Also can you 'hear' the engine pinking or detonating ? if so what sort of sound does it make ?...........its a s2 erst.

cheers, Duncan

Someone correct me but this is what I remember from my college course-

Pinking - When the ignition is too far advanced, the mixture ignites before the piston has got to TDC and is effectively slowing it down - Gives a tinkling sound. If youve ever been in an old Mk Festa 1.1 then you've probably heard it.

Pre-Ignition - Similar to above but generally caused by carbon deposits in the combustion chamber which glow red hot and ignite the mixture early like in pinking.

Detonation - Caused by excessively high combustion chamber temps or pressures. The mixture is exploding rather than burning/expanding in a controlled way. Leads to even high temps and melted pistons etc

As far as I know, pinking and det are two different things, one being audible, and one not.

Someone will have to explain the whole PINGING thing, because I forgot where that fits in (US version etc)

thats strange my engine runs pretty cool, rarely see ACT's above 35c on boost, also the water temps rarely go above the middle. It gets plenty of fuel via a 5th injector as well.

anyone know which one you can hear and what sort of noise it makes ?

so thats what it sounds like ! Under really heavy accelleration I get a 'crackling' sound coming from the front end of the car, could be a small leak in the exhaust I suppose

I take it if your car is detonating you cant hear it ?
