Default BMW's - info on the E numbers!!

Hi all

I understand that say for example E39 is a 5 series bmw, theres E60 and loads of others, but how does it all work?

Is there a pattern to it all? Is for example E38 the old shape 5 series, and E39 is the new one? Why do they not call the 5 series E51, E52, E53 etc?

Thanks in advance

Its a model code - for the actual car not the engine!

there isnt a pattern as such.

Ford use the same - ie a FWD 2001 Transit is a V143 (iirc) but people dont know the ford internal codes.

No real pattern.

ie/ 3-Series from first generation to present day:

-E21
-E30
-E36
-E46
-E90/91/92/93 (90=Saloon, 91=Touring, 92=Coupe, 93=Convertible)

What you really need is an E36 with a S52

The guys next door to my workshop have converted E30`s to run M50, M52 and a S50 engines

Model numbers and engine codes are proper random.
