If there's no history there's ALWAYS a reason. As said it could be 150k miles. If it sounds fishy it WILL be. In all the time I've been buying cars you can count on it, especially if it's cheap. All traders know what an Escort Cosworth is and what it's worth, they're not daft.

Its advertised in classic car weekly also, for someone who sounded like he wasnt bothered about selling it from your phone call, he seems to be advertising it enough!

Basically they're hoping someone is going to come along with money burning a hole in their pocket thinking they're going to get a bargain, falling in love with it and then not doing all the right checks. THERE ARE NO BARGAINS where these things are concerned. If it's cheap there's a reason. And you need to do every possible check you can, DO NOT SKIMP here because it'll only cost you dearly in the long run.

I Googled the reg and found it for sale on a car auction site, on the site it said it was a cat D insurance claim that had damage to the rear quarter that had been repaired.
http://www.carandclassic.com/car/C83659/
I thought cat D meant write off?
Strange as my Escos had rear quarter damage and was repaired by the insurance but is HPI clear.
Edit: Just Googled cat D and it is written off. Says cost of repair is more than 60% value of the car. In that case I would say its had more than rear quarter repair IMHO. Mine had rear quarter repair and door replaced and cost around Ł1500 to repair 5 years ago which would have been around 12% of value I guess.

Yours will be HPI clear because it was repaired by the insurance and not declared a total loss (writeoff). It's only when the insurance deem it's not cost effective for them to repair that they're written off.
But if it is CAT D then it should be declared because it drastically affects the value, particularly for something like an Escort Cossie, which will be why it's the price it is.

Depends what you want really. Like you say if it's been done well and you basically want a car to thrash about in then fine. A written off one will never be an investment but you'll get it cheap so fine if that's what you want.
Most of them will have had bumps and scrapes like you say because they are old cars. It's horses for courses really.

Ive seen that car advertised in one of the classic car papers before christmas it was advertised as "just had a new rear wing fitted". Needs to be viewed really, it could be ok. If it is i dont think you would loose much money if you sold it on.I think it was up for 10k btw

I dont see what the problem is , its an escos for less than 8grand with mot etc etc !!
even if its used as a donor car for something its cheap ! ffs ive seen bare shells on here sell for Ł5k.
buy it, strip it, track it , break it, sell it and you'l still be in proffit .

people people this is by no means meant to be about me or anyone having a pop at the car or owner its quite simply that im looking to buy an escoss and came across this one i gave the bloke a ring as you do and he seemed very offish about the cars history and was very to the point about it being mint and genuine but when i asked the question does it have any history/receipts etc al i got was a sharp (no i know the previous owners so i know its genuine if your interested just make me an offer )with that i thought well rather than jumping the gun ill use this forum as i always do to try and find some info on it or perhaps a previous owner ??? im aware its a cheap escoss all day long as long as its good to use ie engine not knackered and shell is all straight or it dont matter how cheap it is it will be just a waste of money and nothing else.im happy to buy the car being a cat d /c as i have owned many in the past thats not an issue but if it is then why is not advertised as this as the current owner should know this as he said to me he knows its all genuine as he know's the previous owners so if its got no history and is at that price for that reason all he had to do was say it or put it in the advert as i would still be interested as i would know what im buying ??? as im not here to slate the car or owner or the price etc etc i am just after using this forum for what it is meant and gathering some info on a car im interested in buying.cheers peeps

If it shows but you're not that bothered then go and have a look at it with this check in your hand and if it's okay then make him an offer based on that. I've had several cars on the register before and it's no great problem so long as they're cheap and they've been repaired properly, in fact a lot of them are better than so called straight cars. You pays you money and you takes your choice really.

I hope that so many people dont care about accident damage when I get round to selling mine
What seems to be the problem here is the owner seems too evasive and how can anyone claim milage without history by saying they know the previous owners!
Apart from that Ł7750 for an Escort Cossie is very cheap!
