I thought cat D meant write off?

Strange as my Escos had rear quarter damage and was repaired by the insurance but is HPI clear.

Edit: Just Googled cat D and it is written off. Says cost of repair is more than 60% value of the car. In that case I would say its had more than rear quarter repair IMHO. Mine had rear quarter repair and door replaced and cost around £1500 to repair 5 years ago which would have been around 12% of value I guess.
Yes, CAT D is a writeoff, lightest damage or stolen recovered etc but still a writeoff.

Yours will be HPI clear because it was repaired by the insurance and not declared a total loss (writeoff). It's only when the insurance deem it's not cost effective for them to repair that they're written off.

But if it is CAT D then it should be declared because it drastically affects the value, particularly for something like an Escort Cossie, which will be why it's the price it is.
