Default Problem with the Clio lol

I was driving the 'beast' () today & all of a sudden it started to missfire quite badly then a warning light came on & then all I could smell were rotten eggs (not me - the car)

I take it the cat's fooked? Would that cause a missfire?

Any idea's people?

what motor is it ???

the 16v ones that have individual coils are know for coils failing

that would cause missfire & bad smell from unburn fuel entering the cat

It's a 1.2 16V (it's rapid yo)

The light looks like an engine & according to a handbook (that I've just checked lol) it's the 'Exhaust gas monitor warning light'

Would it smell like rotten eggs if it was the plugs or coil pack though?

Coil pack failure, I had it on mine, shouldn't be too expensive to fix.

cars smell like that when they are running from cold (rich mixture)

if one of the cylinders isnt fireing you get a rich fuel mix in the exhaust

i wouldnt trust me but i worked at renault for 5 years & i will be working for them again next week

check the plugs & coil

Cheers lads.

There's a garage a few minutes down the road from me do you think it will be safe for me to drive it to there?

Our 1.4 16v has a healthy appetite for coil packs. It's had 4 now in 2 years.

They are around Ł30 from motor factors (Valeo ones, so proper) and a piece of piss to diagnose/change.

Although the logical answer would seem to be the Cat, it could very well be a Coil pack.

Common issue on the later 16V Clio's are coil packs and CPS. Best off changing all the coil packs together, though by the sounds of it C&B haven't had much luck

I'm changing three or four of these pencil coils per week and i'm not even a renault dealer. really common problem and totally agree with above comments from blacky and SiZT.

if your even slightly mechanicly (sp) minded, you'll be able to fix it yourself.

undo the electrical clip, 8mm (I think) socket and the coils out, repeat for the rest of the cylinders
