Get a 1999 or year 2000 UK turbo.
I have an STI V5 Type R (with 2.5 conversion) and a UK spec Turbo year 2000 wagon(euro import but still same as uk turbo but mine has Sonic blue paintwork!).
A nice 99/00 uk turbo with a few mods is a great car. Just make sure it's runing right as I've driven loads and worked on a fair few cars now and the difference betwen the same model car can be quite suprising.
My favouite is my wagon, I built my type r into what I decided was going to be my ideal road spec impreza (and yes it goes like stink with the 2.5 and big turbo) but I just love my wagon.. it's so practical too. I've just fitted P1 wheels and it sits on tein springs and looks very smart in sonic blue. I did have a vf35 turbo and power fc fitted to my wagon but put it back to standard when I finished my Type R recently.

there are still some very good examples out there and if looked after will last for ever. i know of a few classic impreza's with 100K+ and are still going strong on to the flip side i know people that have had to have to rebuild engines and gear boxes sub 50K miles...it just depends on how well its looked after.
but for every good car there are 20 sheds so finding a good car is vital. Also have a look on places such as Scoobynet and SIDC
My 2003 STi Type UK has got 50K miles on it and still runs as the day it rolled out of the factory but i get it serviced every 6months or 5K miles (which ever comes first) its always warmed up fully before being driven hard and let to cool back down again before been parked up for the night.

Despite the low prices of most you'll find that genuine low mileage, 99/00 uk cars with good history fetch good money. There's still a strong following from the old school lovers and I always keep my eye out for decent late classics. I still kick myself for not buying a my00 sonic blue euro saloon that came up last year, had low mileage too.
