you will need a puller or you will snap the cps lug,,,,,, which is what EVERYONE ends up doing hence they sell for so much

Are you trying to change your timing belt cause i got told that you can just to say feed the timing belt through the gap between the pullley.

No, you can't - at least not with the V belt pulley. Can't speak for poly-v belt pulleys, but when I did mine, the pulley simply had to come off. THe belt's too thick, too wide, and too stiff to get in the tiny gap between the pulley, sprocket and belt guides. No nob jokes on my last sentence please. Unbolt the CPS first, leave it to dangle, then either give the pulley a little tap from behind with a rubber mallet, or grab it firmly in both hands and pull. A bit of a wiggle might help disengage it.Don't lose the woodruff key!!!!!

3 leg ones are easier as they grip better, ive got\use a 2 legged one and can be a bit of a struggle till its tight on!!

You will/may poss need to take the rad and fans off, poss just the fans but mine is quite big so ended up having to drop the rad too get it off in the end!!

3 leg, and put them on the pulley properly

on the pulley there is strengthening bars , make sure the puller is pulling on these points

before you go for the puller try one more time, you can just slip a belt in, it takes a bit of time, and you may need a screw driver to help hold things to get it in, but it will go in with patience lol

just chop the old belt off

Edited due to Jimbo not engaging his brain into gear before typing lol

the correct bottom pully remover are available that bolt onto the pulley then wind it off with no danger of breaking any lugs of the face off the pulley.

sorry i think ive worded that badly

what i mean is, if its not possible to get a puller you can get a belt in, you need to push (with your fingers lol) the belt under the pulley and then round the sides, the screw driver is to hold the belt in place whilst you can do the other side,

shit i made that sound bad didnt i

anyone reading listen to ^^^ DONT push the belt with a screw driver,

and for reference, when doing cambelts we do have the rad, intercooler out and use a puller

Jimbo, it has 6 holes round the outside 3 of which line up with the 3 on the pully, undo the pulley bolt half way out then bolt on the remover using 3 small bolts then tighten up the big bolt on the remover and the pully slides off, you have to take it off to undo the main pully bolt a bit more then repeat the tightening sequence but the rad does not have to come off, on an esc cos the fans do but on sierras without the rads moved back then you can get straight in.

that sounds handy !

at work we only have the 3 leg puller, so have to take rad fans and intercooler out, pain in the arse really

that looks sooo much easier !

you can feed belt round but its a tight fit and not recommended, best off getting it off with puller

ya right dont see the point in changing a timing belt if your going to force it round prob be as knackered as the old one by time its on "do it properly or not at all "

Stupid question but, have you taken the crank pulley bolt out yet?

Best way is with a breaker bar and a second body. Get your assistant to stand on the brakes with 5th gear engaged, then 'undo' the bolt.

Might be worth posting a picture so we can see what's going on.

only the 4x4 pulleys had the 3 holes in the face for the puller to fit into - the 2wd ones dont have anything so the puller legs have to go on the outer face of the pulley

It can be done with a pair of tyre levers, but can result in snapping off a lug if not done with care and thought

I just sat down, held it firmly in both hands and leant back, pushing against the front wheels with me feet for leverage - 14 stone of me soon shifted it!

Must have been loose then as they're usually fuck tight - how else would a 3-leg puller break the CPS tabs off?

The puller they youth is on about is called a harmonic balance puller, and I can't beleive that Mr Gibb doesn't have one!!!!!

neil, this puller I Have is a special one made for the yb, I do have a harmonic balance puller as well, which works on a similar principle, but the one I have is designed to negate the need to remove the rad as last time I used the harmonic balance puller and the rad still has to come off.
