Default turbo wont boost?

chip came around tonight to take the car out for mapping, he got it up and running which was a task as new injectors were way out lol. The problem we had was when it came to adding boost the turbo didnt want to do anything, it wouldnt come on boost, boost gauge wouldn't gp upto zero. im guessing something in the turbo is fooked as cant hear it try and spin up? the shaft looked very good condition when fitted too

Probably something Chip has checked but the internal wastegate is sealing properly isn't it?

i.e - the actuator is preloaded and pulling the penny valve shut?

sorry mate forgot to answer, gearbox works a treat except has either a noisy release bearing or input shaft , so will be back out at some point.

if when you dip the clutch it shuts up then it aint the release but the layshaft bearing in most cases as when you dip the clutch the box stops spining..... whem released again it does and so you get the whine

BUT your box is also straight cut remember so that might also be a reason too

I didnt check anything at all mate.

By the time we knew it wasnt boosting at all, we were miles away from home (took me quite a while to get it running as there were a couple of things that needed fixing first) as I did all the low end mapping first of all so that we could get out to some bigger roads to open her up, as it was starting from scratch with the map, so when we did try and open it up and no boost appeared, I wasnt in a position to look into why , and I didnt have time to look when we got back, so for now I just mapped it N/A for Paul so that he can drive it to central day ok as he is determined to take it there (against my advice, lol)

I have told him NOT to try and fix the boost before then, as the map has NO boost mapping done, so please can everyone save the advice till next week in case he gets tempted to try and run some boost when its NOT mapped for it!

Drives fucking mint as it is though, and I bet at 8:1 or whatever it is, it would literally last forever as N/A
Dead at the top end of course, but goes quite well in the midrange, I bet he could beat an XR3i in a race without him needing to go over 4500rpm, lol

Couldn't be AFM or something?
Diesel I know, but when I got the passat was slow as fuck and couldn't hear turbo at all, new AFM and all returned.

AFM = Air Flow Meter - lets the ECU work out how much air's entering the inlet.

No AFM on Paul's setup, as the emerald setup he has is based around a RPM vs TPS setup with MAP as a modifier.

Im of the opinion its a mechanical fault not anything ECU related, as the turbo isnt even making actuator pressure levels of boost.

So like Will said, a jammed wastegate, or something along those lines, may be the cause.

i personally wouldnt use the car at all till you find out why you have no boost,if you couldnt find out why you had no boost with in half an hour(ie is turbo spinning, air leak etc),then you have some issues, these zetec conversions arent rocket science, try getting someone who knows what there doing to look at it,
ps got loads of area6 zetec turbo parts if anyone needs anything, manifolds, gearbox, intercooler etc

it was more of a case i hadnt looked at it yet, was no boost leaks and we then realised what it was but had run out of time for mapping and i wasnt planning on touching a hot turbo tbh (then to top it off bonnet cvable snapped so couldnt pop bonnet that day night lol

His wastegate was open mate, he has found the fault, no harm driving it like that, in fact it will last forever, lol.

Paul, fair play on sorting everything else out properly first then mapping it with boost, the old you would have done it the other way around, lol

Let me know when you want it mapping and we'll sort something out.

PROPERLY run in now at least, so its ready for some decent boost im sure

you can usually tell when the gate is open as the exhaust is louder, although if your not familiar with the engine it's a no go. Glad you're sorted.

Rick.

Is it sad that im actually genuinely looking forward to mapping it?

Its only a pony little spec motor really, and is on management I dont even like much, but its just been SO long coming now (cause of all the drama with it having to be broken and rebuilt to fund Jim's M3 payback) that I really am really intrigued as to what it will finally go like!

On the old manifold etc, on the part boost map we did, it did drive well, so I reckon there could be a fair bit of potential in it once fully mapped this time

Not long now im sure!
