I dont have an I phone, but use to have to have an 4th Gen Ipod. I bought myself a Kenwood KVT-707 monitor head unit, then bought the ipod adapter KCA-IP500. I could then control the ipod using the head unit. Im not sure if this is compatible with touch / Iphone, but im sure you can buy an alternative.

I have something called an iO Play.

It is wired in to the back of the stereo, and has a bluetooth module.

My Iphone then has a bluetooth adapter, and it streams music to the stereo, and is controlled via a small controller on the dash.

Kit has a microphone and doubles up as a handsfree kit:

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to do something like this

.. and use a line-out to kenwood multichanger connection for the back of the head unit.

Then just need to find a decent cradle, then I will have the sound and charging while on the go

Sorted now

Got both cables needed (and one spare ) It wont display anything on the head unit, but as long as it plays the tunes through my 2 amps, and my parrot car kit will kick in for my hands free, its alllllll good
