I think stu/karl should be aiming for big torque figures rather than BHP. After all torque gives you the acceleration

Iam by no way an expert in the matter so just my 2p to the max power discussion. I remmeebr from the talk with POlish ralycross champion that when he raced an Escort (he now Races RS500 powered Focus) he run perfectly standard engine a few times and it made far more then 400BHP but it used to expode quite often - it was usually piston ring failure from what he said. They run somethiung like 3 bar of boost on T4 -> I don't know if that's possible, but they said someting like that.

i dont see why you couldnt get 600 bhp from a standard yb ?
after all no one has said they want to build an engine that will last forever . if its just gna be trying to get as much as possible before going bang , then i can see at least 550 maybee 600 with the right hairdryer and jectors . after all its all to do with putting the fuel and air thru quick enuff isnt it .

Spot on mate.........IIRC In the Formula 1 turbo era the engines were 1400 cc and in qualifing were producing over 1000 BHP

They used a more durable version of the engine for the actual race on the Sunday.........but those were still over 800 BHP from a 1.4 litre

Yeah, you can really compare a mono-block/head (i.e. the block and head were a ONE piece design) F1 engine to a YB engine. And they were 1.5 litres .

Ooops, sorry Mike......they were indeed 1.5 litre F1 engines......

I must have been thinking of the Renault 5 Turbo boys - they get huge power from thier tuned 1.4 litres too - also on srandard bottom ends with 2 valves per cylinder and pushrods

Doug,
Please also insert the following word in front of "power" in your above sentence "claimed" .

you can compare what you like at this stage as its simply hypothetical , i think if doug was really comparing the two he would have said a yb could produce 1250bhp as its a 2 litre .

With unlimited budget something similar to YB would produce this much.

Ive seen 218bhp@wheels from a 100% std GTT bottomend is the most IVE seen PROVEN, but that was with a very small turbo and STANDARD intercooler (just a very trick small turbo, mental headwork, and 2bar boost), i think others have proven more tho, but unsure.
GT Tuning used to claim 300 from theirs with a std bottomend, but was never proven barring 12.6sec 1/4s...

Ive seen a 360bhp@flywheel figure from a non std engine (using a .63 T34 from an esc cossie, and Nitrous), but still the normal 2valve (ported) pushrod head n 1400cc. Std crank n rods.

Using the Gordini head 350bhp is easy and im pretty certain figures well above 400 has been done in the past (in turbo2's, its same block, different head).

And back to this engine, i truly belive, providing manifolds are a free choice, that a fair way over 550bhp is possible using a GOOD std engine. Providing the rest is specced right, i dont belive youl hit the limit of the std head ports n cams...

hmmm. dunno, but if you ever decide to test a cvh to death, take mine!as long as i get all the good stuff back with the dead engine if it blows! then remap to slightly less when i get replacement std bits! but obviously not as interesting as yb power,so please, carry on.... oh i reckon 557.236bhp and 501.269 lb/ft rounded up of course to 3 decimal points!

Lee, dont think we will need to do that. Will leave it up to Stu to decide whats needed money wise

Also, you gonna be at the Vauxhall versus Ford rolling road shootout tomorrow?? Should be fun - might be a bit far for you: Plymouth.
