![Clap](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/9c-clap.gif)
so what are the must have apps/games then? lets have them... oh and do i really NEED to jailbreak it?
oh one question though if anyone can help.. i have set my ntl mail up via pop3 on the pop.ntlworld.com server but i wanted it on imap (so i can delete msgs off the phone and they will be gone on my pc) and tryed via imap.ntlworld.com server with no luck, just wont connect? any ideas?

Thrush will be your man for the advice!
But if you want mms.... go to the app store and just search for mms... theres one, which has a bright red application symbol and that works REALLY well!
You dont 'have' to jailbreak it, i just did mine to change the appearance of the buttons!

I'm a huge Apple fan - got a Mac, Ipod / Shuffle etc but I really see no point in an I-Phone I must say ! I know it's clever (brother has one) and he says they are handy but....it's a phone, and nothing more....all I need it to do is allow me to ring others, others to ring me and the same with texts. What else do you need on a phone ?

its still a brilliant bit of technology and like i said there is not much that all that can touch it at the moment.. if you disagree your either on some kind of OMG I HATE APPLE emo type thing or your fucking blinkered...
i have always had nokias, ive had lg`s, sonys and used a number of other phones, pda`s etc so it not like im apple blinkered i just think it is very very good...
bar the couple of bits like mms and bluetooth! it does everything effortless..
anyway its not a iphone vs the world thread so back to my origional post...

@ Mr S1 - that's the entire point of the iPhone tho - it's for people that DON'T just want a phone that does calls and texts. It's for people that carry around a phone, a PDA, an iPod, an organiser, etc etc. It's designed to be all those things in one. The actual phone part of it is very basic, but the whole point is it to be much more than "just a phone"... It actually came from the iPod Touch - Apple wanted a way of using all the internet and email features of the iTouch without being restricted to wifi only - hence the need to access cellular data networks, which saw it evolve into the iPhone...
As for whether you need to jailbreak - it's personal preference. Personally, I think it opens up so much more of the OS than is as standard and allows you to explore the OS to it's full potential. However, a lot of the "big" jailbreak apps will be redundant when OS 3.0 comes along - MMS for pics and contacts, SMS forward and single/multiple delete, system wide search - contacts, pages, emails, apps, notes, note syncing, Google calendar support, stereo bluetooth (still no BT send/receive tho!), voice memo's, cut copy & paste, etc etc.
I'd personally still jailbreak. The iPhone has one of the BEST 3.5" LCD screens on the market, with a beautiful high resolution (320x480 @ 160 dpi) and it's wasted when you stare at a blank, black homescreen..... By jailbreaking it you can totally change the appearance of it - have backgrounds behind the apps, change the icons, the docks, the layout, etc etc;
![](http://i41.tinypic.com/s4z87k.jpg)
Plus countless other little hacks you can implement to "improve" upon the OS and make it work a bit better for how you want it....
As for why you would buy an iPhone over other phones on the market - it's personal preference. I'm not an "OMG, it's Apple so I have to get it" - the only two Apple things I own is an iPod and my iPhone. Yes I'd really like a Mac to replace my PC at some point, but currently there isn't one to the spec I want for the price range I can afford. As for phones, I've had loads, and tried loads. Like the Neal666, I've mainly gone for Nokia's in the past, but tried Sony's, LG's, even blackberry's (the new Blackberry Bold is actually VERY nice, but the screens too small as are the buttons), but I couldn't go back to one of them after my iPhone. For me it's the best email/web-browser/multimedia device on the market. I use it for calls, texts, MMS, music, video, email, internet, aswell as it being a portable device for contacts, locations, calendar, notes, etc. I use it as a mobile air-disk, and can connect to any computer where's there's a wifi network to add/view/retrieve/edit documents, pictures, music, video, files, etc on the move.
I'm actually really surprised how much it's integrated into my life as it goes!![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/shocked.gif)
Google + iPhone = my digital life easily managed

(still no BT send/receive tho!)
do you think this is down to the fact it will be then possible to share music between iphones and not need to buy from the istore?
do you have any idea about the problem with imap i was having mate?

Possibly yes. It's in Apple's interests to not want to participate in file-sharing when it comes to music. However, it's still entirely possible to do with App Store apps over wifi so I really can't see the point of the restriction of BT file push!
What is the IMAP problem you are having?

Right, from what I can gather, NTL/Virgin email accounts don't support IMAP, only POP3
Settings should be;
POP: pop.ntlworld.com
SMTP smtp.ntlworld.com
Make sure SSL is off.
USe port 110 for incoming
Use port 25 for the SMTP
Personally tho, I use GoogleMail - it's SO much better, and integrates perfectly with the iPhone OS. It's easy to set up an account, and also very easy to have your ntlworld email forwarded to your gmail account - you can even set it up (on gmail) to use your NTLworld address when replying to emails sent to your ntlworld address, even from inside Gmail!
But after looking around the web, it looks like Virgin (virgin/ntl/blueyonder) webmail does not support IMAP, only POP3 sadly...

Thrush the smtp is wrong, ntl does NOT let you use this you have to use smtp.o2.co.uk instead,
ie:
Pop account information:
Name: joe bloggs
address: joe.bloggs3@ntlworld.com
Description: pop.ntlworld.com
Incoming Mail server: pop.ntlworld.com
User Name: joe.bloggs3
Password: xxxxxx
Advanced:SSL-OFF
Server port:110
Outgoing server
SMTP:smtp.o2.co.uk
THEN
primary server =smtp.o2.co.uk - ON
settings: host name-smtp.o2.co.uk
Username-your o2 username
password-o2 password
use SSL-OFF
authentication-Password (ticked.)
server port:25
This assuming its on an o2 account in the first place.
If you fook up you might have to delete the ntlworld account and start a fresh, even possibly reboot the phone after deleting the account.
This all works for the ntl and you send/recieve email as you would normally from any phone, you have no need to log in any where to send/retrieve just go to youe iphone email in box and it should connect as normal.

I love my iphone, wouldnt be without it. I can go browsing and its VERY usable. I LOLed at my mate who has the HTC Touch HD and the widget you install over the top of the OS to try and mimic the iPhone.
Roll on the new iPhone and OS 3.0 in June

if you installer put this in your resources http://i.danstaface.net and install will convert any song you have in your iphone music library to a ringtone or sms tone.very straightforward to use. best way is to add the song u want as a sms via itunes then select it .

Personally, I don't trust anything on Installer and don't use it. I have known SO many peoples iPhones to get badly fucked up after installing stuff from Installer, so I stick to tried and tested stuff from Cydia....
And if anyone does use Installer - for gods sake stay away from an app called KATE - it looks great but it's a serious iPhone killer!!!!!!
