Default Snapped Cambelt In A Year

The cambelt on my mams focus snapped last night. she had the cambelt replaced at our local rapid fit on the 13th of march 2008, so more or less a year ago. she had the water pump done at the same time. its a 1.8 black top zetec, according to my local ford dealer the belt lasts 100k miles or 10 years, which ever comes first, my mams done 7k on it in the year since it was done. she hasnt spoke to the manager of rapid fit yet as he wasnt in today, she's going to see him in the morning, but the lad she spoke to today said its over a year so not there responsibility. so whats peoples opinions, are they responsible or is she up the creak ?

every ford cambelt should have the kit fitted no matter on the mileage

It was supplied and fitted by rapid fit mate, i would assume that being rapid fit they would use ford parts, but i dont know so cant be certain. the receipt says supply and fit cambelt, i checked it earlier.

over a year, so i highly doubt you will get anything out of them.
it does not matter that its ment to last for 10 years, you cant comeback in 8 years and say look its fooked.

you might be lucky and they will discount the labour to repair the car.

Ive told her not to get her hopes up, i dont expect them to sort it free of charge tbh. i had to explain to her how serious a snapped cambelt is, she was under the impression you just put another one on.

Take it back with the receipt and argue. If they say no, ask for the number for Ford Customer Services and ring them while there. Tell them everything and they will sort it out for you. Ford Customer Services have the authority to overule the dealership and have it fixed under warranty.

if the tensioner was done at the same time then customer services will sort it as it shouldnt fail within a year, if the tensioner seized up and it was just a belt then,,,,,,well apart from not doing the job correct to ford recomendations they may also pass the buck, they will have a record of the milage of before and after too, sounds like a tensioner has failed though tbh

ps: ford pay for the warranty not rapid fit btw

Actually never checked if it was a belt or full kit mate, just had a quick look at the receipt. she better have got the full kit, i told her at the time to get a full kit not to replace just the belt as thats what i was told when i got the belt done on my old silver top.

Aye if me mam has to foot the bill mate, its not going to be cheap, infact, id only value the car at about Ł800, so it might not be the rite move to repair it depnding on how much the bill is. i wouldnt mind, it was me who was on her case to get it done in the first place, the car was 10 year old last year, so it was due changing.

mate how much was the price of the parts, a cambelt kit is around 80 quid but a belt uptp 30 quid,, though as said should have been done proper as its not a back street garage

if you do decide and need parts as your a local bloke to where i was born ill get something sorted for you parts wise if ya need mate

You're braver than most to let it go the full mileage though!

Probably the belt was overtensione when fitted. A buggered pulley would normally mean it would jump rather than break.

it may have seized though rich and that would make it too tight and snap too, sence that happen alot

yet i STILL get garages saying "tensioners fine, just needs routine belt change

its like changing one brake disk, 1 plug ect

Cheers ginge, appreciate it mate, ill give you a shout if i need anything. as far as the prices she paid mate, havnt got a clue. ive just spoke to her and told her to have a look at the receipt to see if says kit or just belt, she said it says cambelt kit, so fingers crossed they might sort it, as that would be a plus side for them if it was just the belt as they could blame other ' factors '. i wouldnt mind, i had problems with them in the past, and there has been a few storys about them round the town over the years, i told her to take it to holiways for said reasons, but rapid fit were cheaper, so she ignored me and took it there.
