i love bikes but had an accident when i was 20 on my cagiva mito, was doing 30-35 down a main road and some prick thought it would be funny to run straight out of a pub and across the road ! i hit him at that speed didnt even brake, i went straight over the bars and woke up half an hour later
we pretty much landed in the same place i had broken nose ribs etc but he came off slightly worse, i basically severed his leg off and came round to him screaming and calling me a cunt ! i was in traction for 3 dyas and hospital for a week and he didnt walk for about 2 years apparantly !
wouldnt ever ride a bike on the road again
ive pretty much come to the conclusion that unless youve riden a bike then you dont look out for them ???
Very sad about the fella on here but sounds like hes a strong fella

Yeah it is a worry. I worry about my brother foreigneRS when I know he is out on his bike but if you love to ride as bikers do then it's not worth denying yourself. just put the energy you would use for worrying into intelligent riding, reading about safer riding, track practice etc. I bought a new blackbird when I passed my test but it's so powerful i respect it more than my gutless little R6 and concentrate on safe riding a lot harder on it.

Imho bikes arent dangerous at all .......
when they are parked .
If you ride faster than your meant too on the road its pretty much garunteed that you will get hurt at some point.
As for the idea that new riders should be limited to 400cc for a while , that wont make any difference . i started road bikes with an RD 350 and ended up riding harder to keep up with and get past friends on things like blades etc etc .
I stopped riding the day i found myself thinking about my kids , it literally put the fear of god up me and made me feel sick, i nearly got off the bike (a TL r) and phoned a friend to pick me up . I havent touched one since but miss the buzz, although since getting into freestyle jetski's i havent missed it as much, similar thrills but much softer landings when you get it wrong

I remembe rthe night of Carlos accident. I stayed just behind the main road where it happened.
I had been in the house and could hear the motorbike going up and down the road.My mum had just come back from the shops and said there had been an accident. She said the bike looked yellow, but I knew then that it was orange, it was the streetlight that made it look that colour.
Having made my way to the hospital, I met up with a few of the foks we ran about with and eventually spoke to Carlos dad.
Over the next few weeks and months I made many a trip up to hospital to see Carlo, brining him up a happy meal, most of the time it was probably cold by time he got it though!
The memories of seeing him in hospital and upon his return home , I will always remember.
I never was much of a motorbike fan myself, but after seeing what happened has certainly made me realise how dangerous these can be in the wrong hands and I can imagine how Carlo feels right now.

undeniably some of it is natural selection. I try to tone it down so that there's lots of people who could be described as lairier than me. that way they are more likely to pick up a Darwin award all else being equal (which they aren't).
Pictures of your kids near the speedo should help too.

had bikes all my life, went to spain last year was absolutly fantastic.. bikes are no more dangerous then a car..point im making is my brothers had superbikes all his life and had a few accidents but none to bad, one day he took some freinds to the train station in there car as he was looking after there house while they were gone , the car wouldent start so his friend had a quick look under the bonnet the car started and my brother then got in the back of the car, after a few miles the driver hit a brick wall and the car spun 360dg this put my brothers neck under the front seat and broke his neck and back... the piont here is he had riden bikes at massive speeds and that dident nealy kill him ..it was a car thats left him crippled he can now only move his head and doesent want to live. ask him whats more dangerous>>

When I first saw you in X-house you said COMPENSATION and ESCORT COSWORTH in the same sentence!!
I think you were in the ICU for 3 or 4 weeks then onto the wards then moved up to the royal in Glasgow.
You were always asking how your Fiesta was getting on, wanting it to be ready in time for you being able to drive again.

Just think ppl when your out on the bikes even if a bike overtakes me in the car now i hope & pray that i dont turn a corner to see him off the bike!
Here are a couple of bad memories to get you thinking.
I was 18 year old when i was concious (sp) the docs & a phsycoligist came in & told me that i had a colostomy bag in that was horrific news imagine being 18 & living with that , i didnt because i was being cared for in high dependacy but at the time they didnt know it could be reversed.Which it is now.thank god.
Another time i was lying in traction external fixator on my pelvis & leg i was obviously on my back some doc came in & was pulling at my right leg the one in traction next min they pulled a big pin out my heel that was in there to set my de gloved ankle! cant beleive they done it when i was awake.... the list goes on.....

I recall you saying that you remembered going past the fire station, shouting and hitting Smithy to stop then a bang then around 3 weeks later you woke up in hospital.
i think your outline had been marked on the road as the police thought it may have ended up a fatality.

Also I've been first to the scene when another car pulled out of a parking space into a bike - again not the bikers fault at all but there's no real protection and the guy (kid really) landed awkwardly. Was basically pronounced dead at the scene
As much as I loved riding pushbikes, downhill MTB'ing etc when I was young, I would never get on a bike. Never have and never will......

I love bikes, I had a 50cc and was counting down the days to my 16th birthday, then on my 17th I bought a TZR125. After I passed my car test I didn't ride for 7 years, then I took direct access and bought a GSXR600.
Nothing in my book beats a nice day out on a bike.

Hit a tree, not my fault or even a car drivers fault, but another biker! He decided to overtake me going into a tight bend which he had never been round before(I had several times!) He lost control panic braked sat himself up and cut straight across my path, leaving me nowhere to go other than off the road. I suffered the usual biker injuries, broken pelvis, punctured lung, broken ribs and a fractured back.
Bike didn't come off to bad really, think i protected it from hitting the tree
I would jump straight back on a bike tomorrow if i could get my leg over one and i hadn't had my licence taken away due to the poxy brain injury i got from hitting my head off the tree I just love the freedom and the feeling you get from riding, you just don't get that in a car however fast!

My outlook on life is a little diffierent to most people. I think when your times up....your times up. Whether falling off a bike, getting run over or even shot are all excuses for your time being up. Nothing you can do about it. When your destined to die thats exactly what will happen....how is just an excuse.
I passed my 3 day DAS. Already had an R1 waiting for me at home which I brought a month before. Alot of people confirmed that I would kill myself and that I was very stupid for having an R1 as a first bike however it always really gave me the upmost respect for the bike....ok granted a done a 'few' stupid things on it and took it over 175mph once or twice however am around now to live the story and prove that touch wood up until today I have never had an off. Now I ride a GSXR-1300 Hayabusa for which I have Big CC turbo kit sitting in my garage waiting to get bolted on once my houses extension has been completed. Call me nuts but I just love the speed and rush......nothing what ANY car could give me!

Why would you wana slap a turbo on it,

Bikes are only as dangerous as the people riding them really. Every sunday all the bikers are flying past my house (a 30 mph road) & flying down the country roads, overtaking us at blind bends etc, its no wonder they crash.
Ive only got a 50cc, but I dont really see why I'd need anything bigger atm. It gets me around & does 50mph which is enough for where I go, which is mainly in 30 & 40 limits anyway. I dont see the point in 1200cc bikes, when are you going to need that power? Will a 600 not take u over 100mph?

I've had my bike license for almost 3 years & like S1rst said its the best decision I made, not interested in cars anymore. Bikes are probably more dangerous than cars and i've made a few mistakes but its so enjoyable. I guess I justify the risk to myself.
Let me know when you get a bike Rab & we can go out for a run, Tyndrum/Glen Coe/Oban is a good day out
Glad you're ok now Carlo
Cheers, Mark

It's weird to read about you discussing your accident Carlo as it's something I always thought you simply didn't want to talk about. Glad you're okay about it now mate.
