Default Anyone painted Kitchen cupboards ?

We have got Mahogany colour units and want to lighten them up.

Its a good quality kitchen (few years old now though) and we cant afford a new kitchen in this doom and gloom times we're having.

has anyone used a good type of paint or resurface kit - maybe the graining type you can get - needs to do end panels also (hence not worth just changing the doors)

We dont want it to look cheap - but more rustic (well that what it always says in the house sales brochures).

any recommendations welcome, before we head to B&Q and make a right pigs ear of it.

thanks David

From memory it's Melamine primer you need to use, also, don't use anything water based no matter what it says on the tin as it'll be crap and chip off easily, oil based paints are always better quality. Are the doors flat or are the patterned, might be a bit of a pain int the a$$ to use a graining tool on a curved surface.
Also, is it not worth looking online to see if you can get new doors from some kitchen warehouse type place, easily your best bet and would look alot better.

cheers rog

trouble with putting new doors on - is all the trim and edgings, and special cubby hole bits will still be mahogany coloured and would look like a patchwork quilt.

I know painting is going to be a pain - but probably alot less hassle than a new kitchen.

thanks

I used B+Q kitchen cupboard door paint as a tempory measure when we moved into our house, it looks OK. And will do until we have enough cash for a new kitchen.

Spray painting gets a much better finish but its hard finding the colour and dealing with the over spray.

On my kitchen I just replaced the doors as it was quite a new kitchen when we moved in, but just wasn't to our taste.

B&Q had a deal on where all doors were Ł1 each. Just a shame that the pelmets/plinths and all the rest of the gubbins wasn't so cheap!

Could be worth contacting B&Q to see when the offer will be coming back, as I have seen it a few different times now.

get yourself some of this bin primer it is shellac based
i use it for priming over hardwood when a customer wants it painted white
make sure you give it all a good wash down to remove any grease etc
after priming paint the doors etc with oil based eggshell for a nice satin finish
all those paint and grain kits are water based and you have to clear varnish them to seal them up after graining
you can get it from a dulux decorating centre if you tell me where you are i will tell you the nearest one
