Default retraining to become an electrician

i'm doing a lot of work about the house and would like to save money by self certifying to part p (personally i would not bother as i know my electrical work is correct, but the missus insists on it in case we need to let or sell)

I'm thinking of taking a course like this:

http://www.ableskills.co.uk/electrical-course.htm

anyone had any experience of this training company or can recommend any others (south or east of england prefferably)

also, any funding available to those out of work?

How do you know that if you aren't qualified?

it's only installing a few more sockets in a ring final circuit and a few additional lights, it's not rocket science. it's easy enough to read up on the regs on t'internet to know what's what. how difficult can 3 wires be?

Not more part P`ers. Im a qualified electrician and hate the sight of the part p brigade one week wonders out on sites. Sorry mate but there is a reason why electricians take years to learn their trade. You have to know what your doing and be able to test and certify your work, and actually understand the readings your getting. No work in the trade at the minute aswell.

as said part p is bolox,i only agree with the testing & certification aspect, notification smacks of big brother to me

again how hard can it be ? i mean if you get it wrong you may only kill someone

these train in `5 day`etc courses piss me off,how the hell can you learn what has to be learnt in such a short time

when i did my 2391 4yrs ago the lecturer threw 2 blokes out cos they hadnt been to college but had done 2381 & thought that was enuf

i dont have problem with anyone retraining fair play to anyone that does it but do it the right way,i think the plumbers on here will feel the same eh?

i am thinking of doing exactly that, but not sure it's something i want to get into. especially if there is not all that much work out there right now.

i already have quite a lot of knowledge from other qualifications (mechanical engineering degree) and have been a wireman making standby generator cabinets in my time, and more recently have been installing, servicing and fault finding air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and cold rooms with both single and 3 phase wiring.

i think i can handle a mega or a multimeter having run a wind tunnel where i used to measure 500 electrical things several times a second

the right way-time served,lots of site work,nvq at college,am2,reg course,2391 inspection & testing course,part p registration,away you go

unfortunateley the college part you find a ball ache if you have done as much as you say bud,but they have to see portfolio`s done,my apprentice has just finished his nvq etc & the fact that each year the the lecturers quit & a new ones started ( some even half way thru the course!! ) there was no continuity at all, they also lost his portfolio & some exam papers.

so as far as finding a college is concerned ring some employers and ask what their experiences have been like

oh and after i`ve put 2 lads thru college they still cannot get my surname right

good luck mate it sounds like it will be fairly easy for you just hope there is work out there for you to do afterwards
