the rs1700t should have had 4wd,ford motorsport were shown what Martin Schanche had done to a MK3 Escort 4x4 for 50 k gbp,but they were not going to do the same. its a shame as his rallycross car beat the quattros at it.

But surely the majority of rally stages are on loose stuff? You've obviously read plenty about it, so I'm not calling you a liar - But I've never heard anyone ever state that the RS1700 (as good and cool a car as it is) was faster than the quattro. The advent of 4x4 transformed the face of rallying because 4x4 was much faster, and the RWD cars simply weren't competitive.

It had had the feasability study done and the preliminary drawings were done, for the 4wd, it would have been much like the eventual RS200.

Problem was the project was poorly managed and it was too late and too expensive. Shame as it had the makings of a good car but there we are. Nobody remembers potential just winners!

Nice topic to read, some good info's about the RS1700T here.

It's a shame that the topic from a few years ago where that South Africa dude was restoring the a RS1700T hasn't been updated anymore.

4 is a number that rings bells, one being Malcolm Wilson's.

Well I know of four at least

Malcolm Wilsons one
The ex-Nutter Car
The one on the Resto Thread in SA
The one in the US I posted a photo of

I'm pretty sure there's a couple more tucked away from prying eyes IMO

There were 2 main 'rally' ones WVW100W, and WVW101W, and also Wilson's 'road' car,

Is this Nutter's Car?
White one

Found this too, but presume it's a rep
Red One

I've seen that red one - I think it's a Cossie powered replica.

Those were the two main test mules. Wvw100w went through many guises and was believed destroyed at least once, who knows with boreham tho, the way they swap Id's noone will ever know for sure

White one 'may' be the nutter car, it appears to be in action in SA, but it could be any of the Mick Jones cars that went there

Red one is deffo a Rep, i'm sure RS Specialist or the other big dealer had it a while ago but it's the most faithful replica of the road car kit i've seen for sure

That's bollocks, as the fwd normally aspirated "Maxi" cars will MURDER the WRC cars in the right environment (tarmac), so expect the same for the Quattro's -v- the RS1700 in the right (tarmac) environment . 4x4 isn't always faster (unless it is on the loose) .

There might be a suprise offering at some RS shows in the near future(might not be this year), A 17T returned from S.A. to the UK and is being restored.....

I was talking to the owner at a recent rally.....it'll get a few of the show participants going i'm sure.....

Steady on - As I said the majority of the rally stages in a season are on the loose stuff, I never mentioned Tarmac! 4x4 is better for rallying in general and RWD cars aren't competitive, so I stand by what I wrote.

I'm aware that a Maxi car can out perform a WRC car on Tarmac, but I've never seen anyone state that the RS1700 was faster than the quattro 'overall'.

I think your probs correct....i know it came with some 35-36 cases of spares etc....needed a re-paint and the engine re-building...

The guy who owns it now aint a true bufty and is the most down to earth chap u'd meet....when he showed his RS200's he always drove them to shows.....

How many people will understand the uniqueness of a 1700T will remain to be seen....the genuine ones are exceptional machines....

Is this the one you mean?
