I dont know much about these. Going from the pics, I assume they left ford like this, with a cossie-mounted* 1.7l turbo engine, with RWD and no aftermarket mods?
* I wanted to say transverse / longitudinal but Im not sure which is which

Its a Mk 3 escort body hiding a bespoke floorpan with a porsche style driveshaft, fully independant suspension all round and a longitudinally mounted BDT. I also have a paper copy of the 4wd design for it in cuttaway if i can get near a scanner.
It was tested extensively with a hart 2.3 whilst the bdt was being readied and was significantly faster on most surfaces than the 4wd audi.
It was however becoming way to expensive to homolgate and with the advent of groub b was already outdated and at odds with the marketing campaign for the mk3 escort ( fwd! )
The 200 +engines were stored ( and subsequently used in the RS200 ) and the remaining examples were allegedly destroyed, however it is known Mick Jones took a handful to SA to compete in non homologated rallies where they cleaned up ( after being relieved of a lot of their distinguishing body kit to hide their origin!
One of these cars is the Nutter car which was imported back and use by Mr Nutter as described above.
Malcolm Wilsons Blue one is believed to be the only trimmed one made.
If you notice in the test photo's and the sales literature and press shots there are at least 3 different body kits, all being very similar except for tweaks to the bonnet/front bumper

i have seen simon nutter rally that thing at flookburgh, my mate nearly got chucked out for doing donuts on the grassed parking area after we paid to get in.
its not a very good car imo and a decent big engined mk2 escort could beat it,infact i remember good group n 3drs giving it a run for its money.
it used to fuck its gearbox up regularly.
last i heard of nutter was he was rallying in the uae as you get good deals to get over their and make the locals look good when they beat you.

The reliability would have been hampered by lack of development.

Ford had no problem with it, seeing as they were not completing at that particular event.
Whoever it was (i can't remember his name ) drove said Audi, came back to Ford afterwards, and told them to stop development of the rs1700t, as it was already a long way behind, and that Ford needed 4wd.
Hence the rs200.

its a proper thing and i have the performance ford mag it was featured in back in the days when most people looking at this were in their mums fanny still

Im sure ive read/seen somewhere, that back in the day, Audi asked a Ford driver if he would drive their Audi on an Event.

Stuart Turner cancelled it as virtually the first thing he did when in the top job. It was behind shedule and over budget and overweight
Cost and Price was the problem, the could have built it down to weight but they'd have been so expensive they wouldnt have been able to sell the 200. The original target price was Ł23000 ( lot of cash in 83/84 ) but by the time it was shelved the estimated price in road trim was over Ł45k......it was never going to happen

If clubman rally drivers without works support werent getting the performance out of it, so what? Hardly a comparison is it?
Put into perspective, it was way quicker than the last of the work's rs1800's in underpowerd and over weight guise and Rothmans private rs1800's still won the world title in 1983

Which is fine because it was made to be a top line international rally car.

The 1981 World Rally Championship season was the ninth season of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) World Rally Championship (WRC). The season consisted of 12 rallies. While this number was the same as the previous year, one change was made to the schedule, replacing New Zealand with the Brazil.
The 1981 World Rally Championship for Drivers was won by Ari Vatanen driving a Rothmans Rally Team Ford Escort RS1800, the only time a privateer team has won the Drivers' Chmapionship.
