Quick question :- How long should you actually leave your car running when you have arrived to where you want to be? Sorry for the Hi jack

I have Greddy TT on mine. IT works and was relatively easy to fit when fitten together with alarm. But I have lots of problems with it. I have no idea why it resets form time to time while driving, also it won't read my revs properly so I just set it manually. But still it's great help.

I just can't force myself to shut it off after driving. I hate hearing he coolant boil in turbo to header tank pipe. I prefer to be on the safe side. And when I'm on the rallyday/track I can set it for 10 minutes and go order my food while it cools down

I concour, I always overtake everyone, then make them sit behind me as I crawl into where I'm goin, then wait till the fan switches off, or give it about 2 or 3 minutes, whichever comes first.

my mate has a greddy one on his 200SX and normal driving for anything over half hour say requires about 5 mins of idling. after a track day though, that went upto 18 mins

On the track day I burn my hand with the find used to keep the hood open. So it's really hot then....

iv'e got one in the fez, would recommend it but i would never completely walk away from the car, it's just handy at night when the covers go on it's usually just switching off by the time everything is wrapped up. also good at the petrol station, cashpoint etc.

Void your insurance?? Rubbish! I've had my Blitz one fitted for 3yrs & had no trouble. If you drive off boost for the last mile or two, then the timer will have counted down to its default time anyway in my experience. If it hasn't..get to your destination, switch ignition off (activating the timer) and by the time you have taken your seatbelt off, headunit face off, put it away, picked up phone, coat, bag & everything else and fitted your steering lock, the timer will have shut-down. close the door & set the alarm if it hasn't already done so.
also, just b'cos your fan has switched off doesn't mean that the turbo has slowed down enough..which is basically what the timer allows for...to keep the oil pumping thro.
The timer is normally activated via the h/brake switch, so if someone SHOULD get in (altho in reality you will only be a few feet away & the doors will be locked) then as they let the h/brake off, it kills the engine anyway. If it gets banged into gear, the engine will stall., so it isn't going to drive itself off down the road neither.

i got a blitz one on mine, must admit i love it except all the old granny in tescos telling me ive FORGOT to turn my car off
i now just ignore em
i recomend mine tbh,
oh adn rs shawn, fook me ya have tooooo much to do when ya finish driving ya car
i turn off the key, get out of the car and set the alarm , by the time im home and got the pc top boot up the car turns off
oh and i find people are less likly to approach ya car of the engines running as they think ya close by

Interesting.
Maybe Neil from Greenlight can clarify this.
I normally wait for the fan to come on and go off again before switching off.
Do you guys drive your cars from cold? I normally do, I don't drive it on boost until it's heated up though, is this bad?

Surely if you drive it for the last few miles off boost then the temp should be pretty low anyway (or normal level)
But some people are saying they sit there till the fan comes on and goes off again. Surely that is putting more heat thru the engine than just turning off after a min or so before the temp starts rising in the first place?!

martyn; i would say ignore the fan and leave it for a certain amount of time depending on how hard you have driven it, whether you have taken it easy or not for the last mile or whatever. i usually give it about a minute to 90 seconds for normal on boost driving and at least 2 1/2 mins if its had a blast, and then even longer if i have nailed it. basically don't judge it by the fan!

I dont go by the fan! I dont see the point in sitting there and letting it get hotter than it already is
By the time ive opened the garage door, got back in, put on the disklock, stereo out etc its been idling for afew mins anyway as the missus has to move her car too first

if you have declared a CAT1 system on your car, then YES they DO invalidate your insurance as they invalidate the CAT1 certification, therefore voiding your insurance.
rs shawn, if you read, we said use the fan going off as a "general rule of thumb" meaning generally by the time the fan has turned off, its given enough time for the turbo to cool down (ie. 2 mins)

They do not invalidate your insurance!
I was on the phone to Adrian Flux earlier about something else & asked them. They said that it does not invalidate your insurance & if anything changed legal-wise, they would contact every owner who had them fitted.
Btw..I did read all your reply, but as Martyn wrote, why let the engine get even hotter waiting for the fan to cut in & switch off, when you can drive back the last 5mins off boost allowing cool airflow to help cool the turbo.

M7 COS my mate has got a brand new Greddy one for sale if you do decide to go for it, give me a PM
I've got one and like rs shawn says by the time you've sorted all your stuff out and got out, the timer has done its job

Turbo timers are a complete waste of money and a potentially dangerious device to use anyway.
You thrash the car and then pull over to stop, what do you have? Hot baked oil and hardly any cooling as there is zero air flow going through the oil coolers.
The best way to preserve the turbo (especially high boosted units) is to drive normally the last few minutes before you arrive where you are going to stop.
