Default Where to find the best stage 1 tune

Good morning, I have a 93 saff 4x4 with 70k showing. it is completley bog standard apart from a stainless mongoose exhaust and a ramair panel filter. The engine and turbo are fine. My question to you good people is where the best place would be to take my pride and joy to for a stage one tune. I'm in Norfolk, so the nearer the better, but not essential. Would 280bhp be asking too much?

If you want a generic off the shelf chip, then Harvey at SCS in Peterborough (01733 576 614) is where you should go to have an Ahmed chip fitted.

If you don't mind paying the extra for a live map then Stu (Blackpool), Karl (Coventry) or Ahmed (Romford) will sort you out....

how much extra would a live map cost, and what are the benifits over a generic chip?

A generic chip should be more conservative in it's boost and ignition curve to take into account normal wear and tear etc and all the unknown variables of engine that has been through several owners and is a high meileage.

A live map can push the engine to it's limits, as you are det checking, so can push that little bit harder (to the point of det and then pulling back). Expect to pay around twice as much for a live map as to fitting a generic chip.

Sounds a bit painful, so would it be safer for the engine to fit a normal chip? Or is just as safe, just better tuned.

Be aware that your 93saff has full closed loop capability and its worth taking advantage of it... just to confuse you somemore

That sounds pretty sweet, I don't know what a full closed loop capability is, but it sounds cool!, does that mean I'm better off with live mapping? Sorry for my stupidity, I'm an engineer, not a mechanic, and yes, the two are very different.

churchy,
Sorry for my stupidity
Its not stupidity pal, far from it, just a different trade so dont appologise for asking questions, thats what teh forums for

Closed loop is a feature late cars have as std that allows the in built sensors to control your fuelling properly and as such allow reasonable economy with very good and very clean everyday running. Traditionally tuners have reverted back to old fashioned mapping techniques to give the YB more power but we have a new range of chips that retain the closed loop feature right the way up to 750CC and 600Bhp+ thats fully compatible with the ecu you have as std. (Feature in Perf Ford coming soon )

For stage 1 to stage 3 we can supply this system off the shelf ourselves or via our dealer network (you have AP Tuning Locally) should you prefer professional fitment and tuning, which i personally strongly recommend because ideally you really need the fuelling at high boost checking, as with all due respect, your fuel system is probably 11+years old now and in unknown condition. Admittedly the system ages very well and its probably more than capable of the increased power hike, but better to have the fuelling and boost checked and verified as safe by a pro.

Hope this helps.

Nice one Stu, I appreciate your time. I'll have a word with Gary from AP at the Norfolk meet tonight, sounds like the way I will go. Will 280 be possible this way, it would be nice to have the edge over other stage 1 cossies, and maybe the odd scoobie.

Yes, i can send Gary a suitable file across for a larger than normal boost level thats been tried and tested on many vehicles.

Alternatively, why not go for dark greens and the same closed loop software? and 320+bhp?

Won't I need to start changing stuff like the head gasket, brakes and the like once I'm over the 300+ mark? I'd love to get the maximum out of my car, but I wanna do it safely without cutting corners so I don't blow it up, as I do drive it quite hard.

The head gasket is a debateable point. If its due to fail, it will fail. If its ok, it may last a long time, its all laregly dependant on:

A) Its condition now.
B) The abuse it recieves from you.

A conservative 24peak and 22held on that engine will take all the pain you can give it and still drive exactly as it does now or better with fuel economy and efficiency as it is now or better. In many ways its safer than the stage 1 as its got less duration on the injectors and has teh added bonus that:

A) The injectors are brand new.
B) The map sensor is brand new.

So your improving things as you go along
Brakes are generally fine if in good condition, but again, its all down to your driving style and wether you personally find the brakes are delivering what you ask of them.

I see, but will a standard T3 hit that sort of boost? What would the cost of this route be compared to the stg 1 chip/actuator route? I can get some cheap greens off here if this is the best route, it sounds good. Oooooh, I'm starting to dribble! And I might want to kill myself on the road for your info Mr Jamz

The turbo again is an unknown entity to me personally but as an example, myself and many others have old T3's running this level for fun and still going strong.. its 24+maintained that destroys them as a rule

If you were to buy the kit from me you would be looking at:
Stg 2 Evochip "Closed loop" Software: Ł250
4x greens Ł208
1x 3bar Ł75
1x -31 act Ł65
Delivery Ł8
Total: Ł606

Or Ł565 as a package delivered before 1pm tomorrow.
You will have local fitting and checking on top, or a variation of this price if you buy it all direct from AP Tuning. Gary may even be slightly cheaper, you never know till you try.

Mike you cheeky B'Stard!! I'll have to take you for a spin in the new 'refined' version!! (Read - No screamer pipe!!)

Churchy, indeed we can help you out. I'm not sure who you are, but no doubt I will recognise you at the meet!!

Gary and I are hoping to come along, but have LOADS on at the moment, which is involving some evenings!!

I reckon we might make it, even if only to the McD's bit. Speak then!!

Nice one Christian, jus look for the sexy Ferengi style ears, and the ott voice, you won't miss me mate. (I was the 1 warming my hands off your glowing turbo last month on the maccy d's car park). I don't mind waiting or paying extra if its quality top draw craftsmanship, as u get what u pay for in this world! speak to ya tonight mate.

Thanks Matt.
Incidentally, if you wish to go for conventional non lambda software, its Ł100 less. Just so you have something to compare to other compaines adverts as no-one else will be charging Ł250 for the chip if its not the new generation Closed loop software. So Ł465 delivered for non Lambda controlled, but i strongly recommed you stick with Lambda control as "Its the future"

Well, I was quite happily talkin away to smit, when all of a sudden he put his foot down all the way up to the redline , let it bounce off the limiter a few times before a gear change , and repeated that all the way to about 155 i think . It shut me up for a few minutes, which is very hard to do . Very impressive to say the least, as to was the braking. It cant be good for the organs to stop that quick!
