I seem to remember people saying on here before that the water pumps use plastic impeller's which break easily, that will then cause overheating i guess.
Check that its had a metal one fitted, if not then get one fitted when you buy it, think there pretty inexpensive.
And with it being a ford check the rear arches for rust.

Pretty good cars imo.
Things to watch for as far as i can remember are:
Check the secondary inlet ports are opening (should feel a surge at roughly 4000rpm), If not then the inlet manifold runner control may be iffy.
A sort of 'mooing' sound coming from the engine at idle (throttle bodys used to play up),
As previously mentioned check for overheating as the water pumps can fail,
Knocky/rattly engines. Changed a few for knocking bottom end when I word for a main dealer,
A 'wandering' sensation when being driven could be worn lower arm bushes (quite common),
Knocking noises over bumps could be anti roll bar drop links and/or bushes (again quite common),
Check the heater blower works on all speeds. If only working on position 4, I'd put money on it being a heater resistor burnt out,
Water leaking into the boot through the rear light clusters,
Thats all I can remeber at the top of my head, If I think of any more I will add them!

Good advice ^^^
I MOT'd a S reg one in the week and a few things i noticed that mite help you out were the sill's were getting rusty behind the skirts at the back so check them
Also make sure the steel brake pipes are ok where they run next to the fuel tank on drivers side common on all mondeo's and i failed this one on o/s/f lower are play in bush, (as mentioned above)

Mondys eat bottom arms, so check for the car pulling to the side. check for headgasket failiure, not uncommon on V6's. V6's have a plastic impellar water pump as above, its not a hugely common for them to go, but as the miles get up it has been known, some think its an old wives tale, but i changed mine the week i got it to be safe as i have spoke to a few its happened to, so thats one thing id change mate if you do get one, a metal impellar pump is about £50 and not difficult to change. coil packs go on V6's, they tend to missfire when they do so keep your eye out for that. cant really think of anything else off the top of my head mate, there will be probs stuff ive missed, but do the usual checks you would do on anycar.

im sure the only other thing i can think of as it happened to a mates one is listen for a tapping ticking noise which sounds like an exhaust manifold blow.im sure thats the head gasket giving up

the ticking refered to earlier can be one of the manifold gaskets leaking or a head gasket
another common mondeo problem is a wet carpet on the passenger footwell is almost certainly an incorrectly fitted pollen filter. (sits behind the scuttle panel below the passenger side wiper)
