Quick

I presume if they only do headgaskets in std size and oversize every mm, and your engine is only 0.5mm overbore, you use the 1mm overbore headgasket yea? Not the std size?

I thought slightly too big is better than slightly too small as a lil lip inside the bore would promote det at that point, surely?

Anyone else?

no way do you want ANY firering overhang into the bore, the gasket needs to be FULLY supported over the whole area, so if there is any doubt, then use the next size up.
There is generally a fair amount of spare space in a headgasket bore, and I'd be surprised if +0.5mm won't go ok.

no not really steve, stick with standard if u can, provided there is no overhang at all into the bore. It's equally as bad to have a thin space around the bore where the larger gasket is setback, this allows potential for unburnt or poorly burnt mixture to hide and upset the combustion process.

I cant ask him till about midnight cause of the time difference.

He wanted me to order 6 for him. He told me the bore of mine, but i didnt ask anything else (ie which to get ) as it didnt occur to me the gaskets dont come in 0.5s, i didnt check till jus now....

I wasnt aware you could buy oversized head gaskets! ..Me always using liners brings the bore to std or max .25.

If it helps Steve, I and a lot of others run Zetec 3 layer metal headgaskets, ment for std bores (84.8mm) on 2.1 Zetecs which are at 86mm.

And there was no overhang. May just be the Zetec gasket construction.

based on various gaskets i've seen, you'd be very unlucky if a standard gasket would not accomodate 0.5mm, but as always... no guarantees..

I would bet lots of money on the fact that you are not taking any risk, involving overhang. Theres a need for quite big tolerances when it comes to head gaskets, as the fitment could vary a bit. I would say, generally, +-1mm is no problem. Thats my opinion anyway
