Are they direct drive? (clutchless?) Do you know what sort of maintenance rebuild periods they have?

Do you have any experience with the F1 stuff, they look brilliant!

In that case get a Rotax one. Look for a CRG or TonyKart frame. About a grand will get you one with some spares and a trolley on eBay.

There's lots of kart tracks that run open pit lane days for Ł30-50 so it's not too bad if you do it once a month or so. "Generally" people are friendly but get into racing and some people are stupid and will punt you off, safe in the knowledge they know the circuit owners better than you and won't be penalised. (Are you listening Lydd!)

rotax max is the same engine as an aprilia rs 125 without the gearbox but has an adjustable power band valve its clutched and has electric start
its 2stroke and goes like shit of a shovel set up properly will do 0-60 in under 4 secs
and between 60 and 85/90mph depends on rear cog they are great fun and prob the best to start on!
got one if your after one also a kx 80cc shifter and a tkm 100cc with loads of spares

Never heard of a geared TKM? but then ive been out of the game for years.

TKM is 100cc or now 115cc Direct drive 2 stroke. Was a very big class years ago. Biggest class in the country. Taken over by the 125cc Water cooled rotax.

Rotax more expensive but easier on a beginer due to having a clutch and elctric start.

Just to add Tiny means its a Auto clutch. (Rotax Max) Like you get on a scooter where the engine revs increasing throws the clutch shoes out to transmit the drive.

IMO these are a much better one to get for a toy as they are sufficiently fast and you can race them if you want. Ignore anything with a shifter And definetly ignore push start arrangement karts they are a pain for novices.

Heres a pic of the Tony Kart Frame Rotax Max I helped run last year.

rotax max is on a 2001 solo frame not the best make frame but straight and in good nick, had rebuild about 20 hours ago got ALFANO PRO data logger on stearing wheel

tkm i think is 115cc but never had the head off to see is on a solo frame not as clean as the other but still straight

then there is an unknown frame with a kx 80cc air cooled 5 speed this would be a good project for some one to put a bigger engine on something like a 250cc as it has all the linkages for gearing

also got an all round break kit with bias reservoir

Looks half decent. (even if the front wheels are spaced a LONG way out!)

If you view any, look for cracks on the frames, particularly near any welds. Obviously no suspension and some people run high tyre pressures which don't help absorbtion

Direct drive means you have to push start it then jump in it and drive off. Not easy if you are tall.

I'd really steer clear mate. Even though it looks a nice one. I suspect it wont get the reserve though.

Pro Karts are twin engined 4 stroke Honda things, what you want is a 2 stroke karts like TKM or Rotax.

TKM is generally cheaper but not as big grids depending on where you go. Rotax is more common but also a lot more expensive.

Saw a gearbox kart a few weeks ago and those things certainly move, possibly not for beginners though!

LOL, it will be when you go to start it unless you bring a mate and get an easy start wheel, you can start them yourself, But only after a lot of pratise.
seems alot of money for not much kart to me, got some nice bits on it, but would defo put a bigger axle on it

You should have been more patient Mate !! Pretty much anything with a Rotax Max would have been a good place to start !
Honda Pro karts are just dead slow !!
Direct drive TKMs are a pain in the ass !!
First time You take that thing on track You will regret buying it !!
Here are a couple of pics of My old karts..................

I did try! several times.

Nice Birel. But looks a bit virgin. You sure you ever raced it?

Funny how people think the Hondas will be fast as they have 2 engines. Shame then that the frames are built out of the type of ironmongery you find in Victorian bridges.

edited to add : Nice Calender

I added up what it costs for that spec kart and didnt think it was to bad of a deal. Decent rotax maxs looked a bit out of my price range and I did want a newish one.

Thanks for all the info all though.

So will any half decent clutched engine do as am only looking to do it for practise and fun?

Also i believe ill need an outboard starter to start up the engine or is there there anyway i can mount the starter and a battery onto the engine/kart to make it into a TAG (touch & go) system?

thanks

is it a tkm you got?

I got a direct drive kart tkm, stop being a lazy bugger and get on with it lol

if you get a clutched engine you will need an outboard starter and someone to start it for you.

a touch and go tkm has just been released but they are mega expensive.

No its an IAME Parilla Engine (Believed to be an ex-ICA Class stuff)

Thing is i aint got a clue on what to di and worst thing is i can mess around with cars but come to a little 2 stroke engine its doing me head in

Is it true with the clutch type engine it'll kind of idle so you can have it running whilst sitting in it whilst a direct drive as soon as you start it you have to drive away or it'll just cut off?

thanks

yeah with a clutch it will idle when it is stopped and its sort of rev and go, so when you use the throttle when you get to so many revs the clutch will kick in and you will start moving. clutched engines also require a bit more maintenance than direct drive.
