imho of this kind of car owner, they usually "get round to it" one day. then you'll find it on the local scrapheap. they think the car is worth a furtune so keep onto it, then finally loose interest and everyone looses out on what once could've been a nice car.

i had it once with a bloke with two mk2 escort harriers, one fooked and one not too bad, i offered him £800 (6 years ago) for the good shell and the running gear to build one up. they'd been on his drive since roughly 1990 cos i remember them from primary school and he basically laughed at me. less than 6 months later they were scrapped.

Also do you know of many 500's for sale?

Both cars have been totaly stripped and rebuilt , just one into a welded restored shell the other into a brand new shell

Its a no brainer IMO ,

Your correct what you are saying as alot of famous historic rally cars mk1s an 2s have been reshelled 3/4 times and still sell for 100k plus just because who drove the car, with that number plate and id on it that people regognise, although they didnt actually drive the one that gets sold as it probably rebuilt so many times

that owner needs the v5 ripping out of his hands. the guy i bought my car from, his next door neighbor has a white 3dr and it is green at the mo. it has not been washed for years and will end up like this one if its owner is not carful. i will quietly try and get some photo's on here as i am visiting my cars old owner some time this week. oh yeah and the guy wont sell it either.

I know all us RS enthusiasts think as these cars as some of the better models to grace the RS world, but fact is there were plenty of non RS fans that brought RS's back in the day. My neightbour had a new S1,3 door,RS500 and saphire..and they didn't know didley sqwat about its worth or shall we say importance back then!
These posts bring back the reality of the RS brand to me,fast cars which joe public can afford to buy and out perform many a dearer sports car at the same time!!

Still a shame though...and i'm sure its the same for it's owner...but hindsight and all that!!
This is exactly right. It is sad seeing any reasonable car in this state but plenty of cars are bought by people who have no interest in the car as a whole, just want something that looks good and goes fast in their budget. We will the same in the years to come, people will have bought the Focus RS and have no interest in the RS badge, just wanting a quick hatchback. This is not even limited to just Fords.

Very few people will buy a car new, join the owners club with a few days, lock it away over winter etc etc.

The value depends on a lot of things mate

The shell is probs the most un"important as this can either be restored or replaced with new
The important thing is if it still has all the "correct" 500 parts still either fitted or in the boot

Its the parts and the ID and history that matters if im honest as most people either repaint or restore these cars anyway and to be honest the worse they are the more people want them as they see it as a sort of challange to bring cars like this back to life , plus its great to see these cars photo albums when the car is complete , what a great talking point this makes when you see them under the cars bonnet and you look through and are quite amazed at what they have done

You need to see this sort of car to put a price on it

That sort of thing I love and I think good on em. One of my customers runs a business restoring rare cars just like this just for fun, he doesn't make any profit out of the resto, but does make a profit on when they come back to have it serviced and looked after. He can also store them too and charges the rent for it, keeps em in showroom nick too.

I thinks its a great project, and ultimately, a labour of love rather than anything to make money out of. At least the owner wants to give it a go to sort it.

The reshelled car is HPI clear and was reshelled by a big name in the cosworth game ( infact probs one of the top 3 names from the good old days of the race years of the 500 ) and the quality is superb that i would bet 99% of people looking wouldnt know and to be honest probs wouldnt care but i would still let any buyer know and they then could decide based on how they feel

I'm a competent welder and right out of school I worked in a body shop. I know how to bring these back from the dead. I bought a saff (see LHD resto thread) and the amount of rot on my Saff now that I've hit it with a hammer and REALLy gotten under it troubles me. I'm committed, I'd started on it and BOUGHT it so I'm into it. If I had known the extent of the rot I'd have saved my cash.

Call this owner a tosser or what have you but he might just be a bloke who had it, hit hard times and vowed to NEVEr let it go and did his best to keep it (bad storage choices sadly).

Looking at this car, the experience I've had with my saff resto i can see that this car is indeed worth saving if the person whodoes it does it properly and writes a cheque with the intent of keeping it forever. Or if the person can do most of the ugly stuff themselves. Cars that are welded on are fine. Every car has welding and every car has filler on it. If done right a welded car will outlast one with no welding and be stronger.

At the end of the day it's an RS500. Should be treated as such.

The car was welded & painted the owner died. The new owner lives the other side of the road to me & has the car in its unfinished state stored somewhere
