Default Dogs & Training

having had dogs (collie sheep dogs) all my life and moving out recently has meant that coming home in the evenings has been a bit crap and meant me missing having a dog, so the missus and i have budgeted to get one this weekend.

My parents currently have 2 dogs, however i was about 13-14 when we got them and at that age i didnt take much notice to training, more interested in going out .

anyone on here have any tips on training from a puppy? will be one from a farm, and we have plenty of fields (see link below for surrounding area)

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&so...=UTF8&t=h&z=15

so can take for plenty of long walks without going too far, and it can socialise with others as my parents aint too far away (5 mins walk across country) so it can "play" with them and also learn a few things. is there anything else that could be of use? cheers

Have you seen a pup you want that you are going to get at the weekend?

Puppy socialisation classes are worth their weight. Our local vets done these classes. gives them a chance to get to know other dogs and how to behave around them.

Dont be soft or the pup will wrap you around its little paw - trust me, i know im not very high up in the pecking order in our house
although im working on it, it would have been best sorted when they were pups.

Show the pup your the Alpha dog. Eat before it does, walk through doors before it does and teach it to do as you say. Thats it in a nutshell but its obviously alot more involved than that. Treat it as a dog, however lonely and sad you are its not a kid so putting it on the naughty step will not work, they need a firm hand as thats how they learn in the wild.

If you have no clue then lessons can be good but tbh I never took mine as I have been raised with GSD's and he is better trained than 99% of the dogs that come out of there.

Use one word commands, not sentences. NO should be your favourite along with Well done (with praise). The amount of handlers I see saying "don't do that fluffy its naughty and mummy is not in the mood" astounds me.

Puppy socialising classes are fine but taking it up town to be petted by all passers by is better, take it to other areas where dogs go and also by mains roads etc to get it used to traffic. Go stand outside the school gates at home time and it will soon get used to strangers.

A collie is probably THE most intelligent dog in the world!!!

They are dogs that crave stimulation and exercise!!

So, if its on it own during the day, make sure you leave it with plenty to occupy its brain.

The appearance of collies really doesnt appeak to me, but this breed astounds me with how quick it can learn and just how much it can learn!

They are great at agility, so think about flyball or agility classes when its older!

When we had our collie (20years ago) my old man trained it in the kitchen for basic commands sit, lie down etc.

If you put the effort in you can tell the dog to sit, stay and go off for 30 mins and it will still be their.

i had a collie i taught to walk without a lead, sit n stay etc,i did it with biscuits.
rewarded him when he got it right and kept biscuit back till he got it right, and just weaned the amount of biscuits down till he didnt need any and it was 2nd nature, never put him on a lead since he was a yr old, would wait out side shopping centers and shops, could go in to local shopping centre and b half hour,he would stiil be there when you got back, awesome dog.
