Default Old shape BMW X5 knocking noise problem...help.

Seeing as this site is now 70% passionbmw I figure I try you lot first

Had an old preface lift X5 come in with a knocking noise coming from the front when under braking. The noise is reciprocating (sp) and matches road wheel speed ie knock knock knock etc.....its VERY noticable ie not just a faint rattle of say a loose fitting pad, and seems to be slightly more to the nearside than offside. Its already had new disc and pads else where....Ive since stripped these down completely and can not fault either the previous workmanship nor the actual parts them selves, so I refitted them.

Anyone heard of these having any cv joint of transmission faults at all??

Cheers,
Stu.

No its the bushes on the front arms.........allways go on them .( from the battom ball joint forwards towards the front of te car...if you jack it up and turn the wheel by hand to full lock and pull on the wheel while it is on full lock you will see them move...

Also check the rear axle bushes....( big ones x 4 ) had a few already and they are night mare...full axle off with diff the lot to do them inc full exhaust system....

Good luck....

Oh and if you are doing them yourself i would have some ball joints on standby because they do not like to part.....lol

also if you are over a pit you can get them to drive over you and slam the brakes on...this is when you see them move the most....

Lol i done a set on thursday....Not a nice job..have to disconnect the air bags, drop full exhaust, brakes stripped down to remove hand brake cables, disconect brake pipes, disconect prop, disconect airbag clips, disconect sensors, disconect shockers, lower full axle, then have a nightmare removing old bushes and have a nice long home made puller to pull new bushes in then refit the full lot....but i always recomend changing the brake pipes that run over the top while its out....lol

Cheers for your help.....not sure if bushes sound right though, as the noise is road wheel speed related ie its a constant knocking thats consistant with wheel speed all the way to a hault and only happens when brakes applied? Im not normaly stumped on noises like this tbh, but this one has got me so far

You'd be supprised mate i did have a one were they had that much movement on the front bush under braking or cornering it did sometimes not all the time cause a chattering noise..failing that and you checked everything else ABS fault maybe...?

One thing I am unsure about is the level sensor on the o/s/f that looks like it should attach to the lower arm....its not attached as the end is missing. Would this have any bearing on the ABS circuit at all?
