To be honest using a 12 point socket probably didnt help.

I personally would only ever use a 6 point socket.

True. A deep socket may also have been a good idea too so it covers the complete head of the nut!

Deffo shouldnt have done that though.

Why's that? The whole nut has turned on itself, the socket hasn't slipped.

Because a 6 point socket would support more of the nut through having greater contact with it therefore transfering the energy over a larger area of the nut rather than at points on the nut.

Or that's my thinking anyway

if they were torqued with a deep socket i'm sure they would of been fine, my dads gpa rally car run ally nuts and you could destroy them easy if over tightened with a bar and also they wear if not lubed up regulary,, it would surpsise you how tight wheel nuts don't need to be.

looks like they are counter bored, so where the socket was there was no thread to support it, if it was threaded it wouldn't twisted so easy,, or deep socket to turn the bit with thread in it

Yep i agree... if you look at the amount of nut that the 12 point socket is actually gripping its not a great deal whereas a 6 point socket would have gripped the entire nut!!

that said... those nuts should not have twisted like that so must be of a very poor quality!!

I personally would not use 12 point sockets for any application.

These are some steel wheelnuts I snapped a while ago they were overtightened and I didn't not using a deep dish socket they are supplied by TSW.

I think when you tighten wheelnuts up you have to take into account for heat expansion of the ally wheel so they are not done up that tight 100nm IIRC

Alloy nuts and bolts should only be used by people that know what they are doing.

I built up a really really light mountainbike using selected alloy bolts in some places it was safe to use them

It was such a ballache I never bothered again, because you have to be meticulous and you contstantly worry about them

Interesting thread this...

Are we now saying that the damage done to the alloy nuts wasnt all necessarily down to the poor quality of them?

Well the socket isnt working on the total length of the nut...

Was a torque wrench used to the correct number of NMs...

Lots of questions!

Alloy nuts will fail if you abuse them - its common knowledge in Prosche world as the nuts are usually alloy.
