When I had that same error on RP labs, it was a wiring fault within the lead.

Your best bet is to contact RP Labs directly, they are generally very helpful

What lead are you using?

Its NOT a normal lead, it actually has some hardware built into it to allow it to work.

You CANT make one.

i think that it will be the same lead that simon is talking about making to go with his monitor software - something that changes the voltage levels at the ecu to those needed by the serial port

For the techies...

The ecu voltage levels are at 12 volts with open collector output and a CMOS gated input with a pull up resistor to 12 volts.
RS232 is specced at +/-12 volts but most PC's use anything from +/-5 upwards.
So you do need some interface electronics.

Also, another issue with leads is the relative ground voltage levels between the computer, ecu and vehicle earth.
This needs to be taken into account or you wil get unreliable communication or in worst cases a fire.. !!!!

You can easily make a lead but I am unable to publish a diagram here due to the unique way this site is now funded..LOL
I hope this isnt taken as a trade advert because I am not selling anyting..LOL

Forgot to say...

Most USB to serial converters will never work as they are just total shit as the ECU uses a non standard BAUD rate !!!!!!!
In fact RP LABS do not recomend using these. ! (It is on their web site)
