Default Insuring any car you own....

Picked up a copy of Autocar last week and a little piece in it mentioned a potential change in the law to having to insure any car you own from just insuring any car you drive.

Anyone got any more info?

Obviously got potential issues for resto's and the like. More money spinning for the robbing government too.

I heard this as well, but hope they don't follow it through as if I ever losed my job would like to keep my cars, but obviously off the road until everything returns to normal, I don't see the need for it either as cars declared sorn are not on the road so require no tax mot or insurance. They just want to make it easier to send fines out by post. even if a car is insured though it doesn't mean the person driving it is covered thats the part I don't understand.

I don't get the thinking behind it either. Other than to claw in some more money. Of course the insurance co's can top up their losses too.

Used to be able to get insurance for classics and cars laid up but it didn't have tp cover just theft i think.

If its a car of some value i'd always want it covered even if it never turns a wheel, but imagine if you buy a runner to break for parts for a resto. You'll need to insure it until you've broke it and/or scrapped the remains.

It does NOT apply to certain cars ie sorn, or others that are used as spares cars etc, there are many classes of exempt cars.
They cannot under eu law force people to have insurance against third party risks, for cars that are not used.

Anyone who doesn't insure a parked car is crazy. "Storage insurance" is smart.

Making you insure any VIN you are liable for is pretty left wing.
