Default Rear Wheel Balancing

I have having a flick through the supplement manual for the sierra 3 door and it says the rear wheels must not be balanced on the vehicle as this will damage the vicous coupled diff.

How does balancing the wheels affect this?

Just curious.

Does that not mean that that wheels should not be balanced while fitted to the car (think thats how they used to do it years ago). Dont think anyone uses those machines anymore.

I am sure they used to do it like that. A mate of mine has a pretty old school balancer where you put the wheel on top a shaft that sits on the floor, weights are then fitted to make the wheel square with the floor.

it's not the balancing as such that would affect the diff - it would be the rotation of one wheel at high speed

If wheels were off the floor, then it is not very high speed really.
LOTUS for one still use the ON CAR balancing as it is the best by a long way, as it accounts for any on car out of balance, it is a little seat that has a set of two rollers car is sat on these rollers whilst man sits on seat, rollers spin wheels, weight is added etc job done.

If you know they are balanced this way, then you would only have yourself to blame, would it be any worse than the other method ?
