Default Can you fu*kin believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some woman visiting her mum up the road from me (bearing in mind i live on a very steep hill) put her handbrake on DIDNT leave it in gear.

The car has rolled down the hill into B16CVH and wrote the fu8ka off!

It shovved it 2 foot across the drive and into the wall snapping the bottom arm on the opposite site and caving the outer/inner wing in.

Im so fu*king pissed off! Ive had the car 5 years and it had all new engine etc in July!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:wa ll:

Why does it matter that she didnt leave it in gear? any looked after car can hold itself on the hand brake, it shouldnt have to be helped by putting it in gear you only do that as a backup normally.

Get her hands in her pockets cant she

Rubbish. It states in the highway code that when parking on a hill, the car must be left in gear.

When discs get hot, they expand, you put the handbrake on which grips the disc ok. Give them a few minutes to cool, they contract, which lessens the grip of the handbrake, thus making the car roll away.

Should also turn steering, do you do that?

Arguing the point is all well and good, but anyone with a half decent IQ leaves it in gear JUST IN CASE, and turns the steering.
If these had been done (following the GUIDANCE in the highway code) this thread wouldn't exist, and this poor chap wouldn't have a car written off for him.

Sad that this is argued in a thread where someone has lost their pride and joy, I'm sure he doesn't care whether the highway code states 'must' or 'should' etc, just that this person would have followed it's guidance and did the sensible thing.

I hate fucking insurance adverts. Like that LV one. They have a relatively mint old car (the red one, think its a volvo) which they trash. And the gay looking guy has a lime green car

Just shows how much money Insurance companies ACTUALLY make if they can spunk it all on this kind of advertising. Like the Direct line one where they smash 2 passats on swings into each other. Bet that weren't cheap to set up!

Feeling for you mate, not nice thing to happen. I personally always leave my car in gear when parked, you never know. Wasn't a Vauxhall was it?, with their current handbrake reputation!

Regarding all the handbrake comments, might the car rolling away be due to ice/snow? ie it slid away? I seem to remember having some cold weather recently, dunno if anyone else did.

Just a thought.

Sorry to hear about the car dude.

Parked tight to kerb with a lock on would have prevented that.

Unlucky mate, If she is anything like our lass she doesn't put it on hard enough as she doesn't have enough strength to get it off. When i park up she can never release it.

Damn right, as would leaving it in gear, its a harmless habit to get into and might just save an embarrassing accident happening like this one. But then again, I cant recall a time I saw anyone engage their brain for more than 5 seconds whilst behind the wheel

Too true

A citroen I drove recently handbrake wouldn't apply unless you pulled it up firm enough to have a good bite, bloody good idea!

I miss the old cavaliers with infamous disc/drum rear brakes, handbrake on them was fantastic.

weather or not it's in the highway code or not, when you park up on a hill surly it's common sense to leave it in gear?

I always put in gear, even when on my flat drive, handbrake as well.
Makes no difference if I leave other halfs in gear, it's auto so rolls away nicely!!
Sorry to hear this matey, you need a bloody good solicitor now, don't use a crappy insurance company one, as they don't give a toss.
No win no fee is where it's at, as they don't exist if they are crap so you know they aren't crap.
Roosie off here works for a firm that appoint solitcitors, and they are ace, seriously I would give them a ring, you get to speak to the head honcho at the soilicitors as well, one call does it all.
Rooise is on 07850671020.

I don't know you obviously, but you leave yourself wide open to it!!!

Everything i drive is left in gear and on hills turn the wheel towards the kerb! Even leave it in the garage in gear as the Mrs learnt when she nearly put it in the wall starting it. Which is another thing some don't do for cold start to dip the clutch.

IIRC there was a problem with new beetles where it stated in the manual to leave in gear, nobody read it and a few had the handbrake fail and the car run away.

B16CVH hope you get what its worth, my mate had to fight tooth and nail to get the right money for his S1 when some bint done some serious damage.

You do know you can bugger an engine if you leave it in gear and it rolls as it puts excessive pressure on the internals, in the "wrong" direction of rotation.

Heard a case where it de tensioned the chain,
