exactly what i thinking, if you leave it in gear as well as handbrake its not going to turn the engine over to the extent of causing extreme damage, even if it does better what could happen if it rolls down,

What an absolute wounder the car looked mint when i came over i think you should post a picture of said hill with a quote of "would you leave it in gear ?" because that hill is a monster hope you get something sorted though mate it'd be a shame if you didnt.

Jesus mate, unlucky bud. Gutted.

On another note, I never leave my car in gear unless on an incline. But I can't remember the last time I parked on an incline. The most recent and only occasion I can remember is on my uncle's drive which is a huge incline. I think you'd be stupid not to leave it in gear on what must have been 30-40% incline! If it rolled back it would've mounted a verge and straight into a busy-ish road!

Heard a case where it de tensioned the chain,
Surely if it's in a forward gear the engine will be turning in the "correct" direction of rotation?

Check your handbook regarding leaving in gear. Manafactuers now do stipulate you must do it to cover there backs. I am an expert in this since my mates van rolled away

Shit news about your car fella.

I think it is the Honda Civis where owners have been told they must apply the handbrake making sure the button is pressed in (I think it was pressed in ) as it may not engage correctly if not. How foookin hard is it to design a fool proof handbake FFS.

Think about it. It would be the same if you were stupid enough to leave the car in 1st gear when it's pointing DOWNHILL or reverse if it's facing UPHILL.

Looking at the pics I hardly think the cars a write off and needs shelling either.

I'll also add that annoying as it is, it's not like the Renault Owner did it on purpose and if the handbrake failed it failed. ITS AN ACCIDENT! Shit happens. Just try and deal with the consequences. Not like anybody was hurt either.

Its fucked mate, its shoved the whole of the front toward the drivers side and the drivers front wheel has some serious positive camber. Would cost too much to put right. It has agreed value of 5k with the insurance, as long as i get some decent wedge back for it and i can buy it back from the insurance i will be happier.

It snapped the TCA on the drivers side so the chassis on that side has took a belting, the wheels were "straight" when i left it, not sure about the turrets, although the bonnet is up it wont open so ive only had a quick peek. Had to go back to work straight after and was dark when got back.
