Default Comprehensive cheaper than 3rd Party Fire & Theft?

I've been doing some quotes for car insurance for our oldest and found it was cheaper for him to not have a parent on the policy. I would have thought that an experienced driver doing some driving was better than an inexperienced driver doing all the driving?

Then I thought that, with a £350 voluntary excess on top of a compulsory £250, there would be little or no payout if we ever had to claim for damage on his car, so I changed it to TPFT.

How come the price went from £441 for comp to £606 for TPFT?

Am I missing something that the insurers know and aren't sharing?

Heard this few times for new drivers, no idea why.

As for parent, I'm 29 and still put my mum on, and I've 11 years no claims and no convictions, saves about a quarter or more, is mad!

Me and younger brother have been with Elephant for years, can never beat them.

I've been getting quotes over the weekend and I'm 27, licence 10 years, no claims, no convictions, and TPFT is more expensive for me on every car I've had quotes on. Not by a piddly few quid eaither.

Insurers must know thats what us folk with old cars do to get the price down.

Girlfriend with just provisional added about £200 to mine, hardly anything when you think of it.

As I said old dear on mine, saved me shitloads on the M3 - she used it once, got flashed by a gatso, and pulled gearknob off trying to find reverse, so much safer...

Just be super cautious, those that get a parent to insure the car with the son/daughter as a named driver, as policy holder has to be main user, this practice is called fronting and is being cracked down on hard, they will take your money while there is no claim but if older and younger person combo on insurance will make checks upon claim to see about fronting, and it is not hard to prove in most cases.
A friends son did not get paid out for a theft on a £3k car they couldn't understand how the dad could be the main driver(as stated over phone when taking policy out) as he had given up driving due to ill health 6 years earlier, and car was stolen from near a camp in Germany, where his son is a soldier!!

So as long as the parent still actually drives, you'll be ok?!

Think it would be pretty hard to prove in many instances.

For the record I have mother as named driver on my policy to bring premium down.
