Sleep on your back.

Never accept lifts from strange men or very attractive women

my brother just came back, i asked him and this is the response i got....hope its of use

" you wanted some names of places to crash in Asia, these were all pretty cool

Bangkok - Lub D hostel (best place i stayed all year in Asia)
Chiang Mai - IMM Eco (f*ckin awesome pool - although a bit quiet)
Phnom Penh - OK Guesthouse (best full english in Asia - all day everyday)
Kuala Lumpur - Hostel Cosmopolitan
Singapore - The Inn Crowd
Siem Reap - 2dragons guesthouse (owner will sort out border crossing/visa/transport from Thailand)

there are loads others in vietnam/Laos, but they tend to be more hotelly and all fairly similar."

he hasnt shut up about this 'Lub D' place since he got back so i reckon thats a decent shout. also go tubing in Laos.....sounds amazing.

Also try and take in a Full Moon Party while you're out there... I'm choking to go back out there, best fortnight of my trip to be honest.

Was in Thailand a few months ago, but i went to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia instead.

Go to full moon party as said, but apart from that just buy a lonely planet book, plus you will meet loads of people who will tell you all the good places to go

Best advice yet, let the lonely planet book be YOUR BIBLE! you'll get people pulling you off to "guesthouses" and hostels etc etc as soon as they see a white face with a backpack. but if its not in the book just dont do it. its that simple. 3rd world country, different language, your going to get into trouble very easy.

having said that i'm not trying to dampen it, its an amazing place, try ko-chang its an island off the south, 4 hours on coach from bangkok. mint.

*edit* and i forgot the rules

dont drink the water, dont eat the veg and always check for a penis

Once you've checked for a penis have a look for some scars ;0)

Failing that, stubble in the morning ha ha

i went same time as you a few years back its just at the end of moonsoon season which is quite an experience. like others said lonley panet guild and others out there will tell you where to go.
As said Koh chang is a must i think most beautiful island there imo i stayed at tree house, lonely beach. Watch out for needles if you go to full moon party do not take your flip flops off on the beach, i wore trainers just in case, saw two people with needles hanging out there foot, NOT GOOD.
In phnom phen go to a place called lakeside there are lots of guest house cafes and bars Drunken frog bar is a must and so is the lazy gecko cafe ask for an aussie burger, i gaurentee you will not eat a tastier burger in the world FACT. make sure you visit S21 prison and the killing fields.
when you leave take your passport, docs, cashpoint card (nationwide) and the shirt on your back you need nothing else is the best way to it buy everything when you get there. i spent loads of time before going buying all the essentials and worrying about what to take then ended up carrying around a load of stuff that i didnt. they have tesco there too oh and 7eleven on every corner.
hope this is of use to you.
p.s. ping pong show is a must

I would love to go backpacking round Thailand, we looking into going again this year for our holidays, will be going to Koh Pagnhan for a couple of nights to go to the Full Moon Party as never got there last year, Then Koh Samui and Bangkok for a couple of days.

If you go to Koh Samui, Chaweng Lake View & Black Moon Party is a good night out.

2 islands to visit is ko samui & ko pang yang; stay in the beach huts on the beach

go to the full moon party

go elephant treking

have a proper thai massage (not the sort your probably thinking off!)

dont be afraid to eat from the streets; 20p will buy you a decent meal

go to the palace and hire a tour guide

go shopping - custom suits can be made for peanuts

dont buy DVD's, they are shit quality

hope that helps
