Smile EGT thermocouple K-type - which one ?

I have a pectel monitor with input for exhaust gaz temp, and have to get a K-type sensor with I would say the extra wiring to connect it to the monitor plug.

Anyone got good address (ebay prefered) for sensor, gland, and extra wiring ?

Thanks in advance !

don't forget that you cannot extend TC wiring with any other wire apart from the same wire that the TC is made of as you will have more disimilar metal junctions affecting the voltage generated

Good point - however you can as long as there is no net temp change over where the change in material is made to the junction at the other end (i.e. where is changes to say copper and then into the thermocouple input).

Still better to get long thermocouple though - buy some fibreglass insulated telflon coated k-wire and cut it to length.

All of the wire, connectors, sensors and compression glands are available with screw terminals so it's nice and easy

I find farnell is quite good.. I was shown the light with a 150x3mm TC and stainless steel compression joints..

a 3mm is a good compromise between response and durability for EGT

Thanks for the advices yet ! So TC diameter should be 3mm, but what about the length ? I will put it at the end of the 4wd exhaust manifold (near the turbo), so I think it shouldn't be very long. Found that one which may be good, but its 150mm long:

http://uk.farnell.com/labfacility/km...ple/dp/7078183

I will then need a correct extra 2 meters long lead to get to the pectel monitor inside the car.

Am I doing things right there ?

personally i would get one made from inconel that can withstand higher temperatures and as you say it doesn't need to be that long (although they often are).

shorter is better as you only need 50mm or so through the top of the gland (get stainless steel glands).

as you say, you will need a proper extension lead as the junction will be in the engine bay which is a different temperature to the car interior where the 'cold' junction is, and other cables would make an incorrect reading

I don't think they sell inconel TC on that site unfortunately. Maybe somewhere else ?

Ok I guess they are marked at NiCr-Ni (nickel and chrome, and I know inconel is made mostly from nickel, but with magnesium, chrome and few other things), so these must be the ones I need.

Thank you mate, gonna order that one have to find a "gland" now :P

i can't find them on the conrad.de site anymore

they used to sell some that could withstand 1250 deg. C, but it doesn't matter. if you have over 1100 then the thermocouple is the least of your worries

i think the NiCr-Ni is just the materials that make a k-type thermocouple junction

Just got 2 more questions :

Where on conrad's website do you find the green connector ? I need one to connect the extended wire to the pectel monitor EGT plug.

Also how do you make the junction between the std EGT sensor wires and the extension wires ? Do you "weld" (don't know the correct english word) or do you just put the wires into another plug ?

Help welcome !

if you need to extend a thermocouple, the best way to do it is use an extension lead made up of another plug and a socket. but you must use thermocouple wire.

Well I think I'll order from the website richard told me.

Just want to be sure all the parts are correct before ordering them tho

http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=190/3
Thermocouple k-type, inconel 600, 3mm diameter, 150mm long with thermocouple plug

http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=280/3
Extension lead. I have a female connector on my pectel monitor, and there is a male connector at the end of the thermocouple sensor, so I have to take a female/male extension lead, does it mean I have to take a plug/socket one or ? My english isn't that good

http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=310/1
Also unsure about the compression fitting kit. I know I have to take stainless steel, but other than that, don't know which one would suit the thermocouple sensor.

Thank you very much lads !

I wouldn't go for one that has the plug connected to it like that as it is difficult to secure it without having problems with vibration

I would use one like this:

http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=190/1

405-0653.0mm dia x 150mm long

but that comes without plug, but not a problem to put one on (just remember that the green wire must go to the + side of the plug)

http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=280/5

724-320Type K Standard Plug

http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=280/3
Extension lead. I have a female connector on my pectel monitor, and there is a male connector at the end of the thermocouple sensor, so I have to take a female/male extension lead, does it mean I have to take a plug/socket one or ? My english isn't that good

yes, you need a plug (male, to put into your female on your pectel monitor) to socket (female, to insert the male on the thermocouple into)

http://www.tcdirect.co.uk/deptprod.asp?deptid=310/1
Also unsure about the compression fitting kit. I know I have to take stainless steel, but other than that, don't know which one would suit the thermocouple sensor.

obviously it needs to be a 3mm one, and then the other size is the size of thread that you can cut into your exhaust. you need a tapered thread, which means that the hole gets sealed as you tighten the fitting into the hole and it gets wider

Thank you very much lads !
hope that helps matt
