Default American pickup RHD conversion recommendations

Has anybody had any experience of RHD conversions on American pickups?
I'm planning on importing either a Dodge Ram 3500 DRW or a Ford F450 DRW but want it in RHD.
Seen a few companies advertising conversions but want some feedback rather than just going to the firm with the fanciest website!

i remember clarkson doing a test on the f150
it was supplied as a rhd conversion from new from the dealer
it was a total mess of a conversion according to him
he said it was a company over here that done the conversions
dont know what company it was but he said they were rubbish
i think they trucks are realy cool but it would need to be rhd,
but that always put me off a bit

Just my 2p worth, I went to the one in bury manchester (think thats the one you refer to with the fancy website and ads all over top marques), to view a RHD SRT10. We got there and parked around the rear where we were able to view some current vehicles been worked on. Now your talking 50k+ vehicles here and there was 3 or 4 what can only be called 'scallys' all over the engine bays with portable drills with hole saws in them butchering the living daylights out of the bulkhead! Looked so unproffesional you wouldnt believe. The end job looks reasonable however but I wouldnt want to spend that kind of money on such shite workmanship. Another thing to note is things like the keyless entry pads on the doors (ford f150 for example) doesnt get swapped in part of their conversion so that remains on the left hand door. The dashboards they have moulded arent the best either. Anyway, I havent bought anything from them so cant give you a 100% road test on one of there conversions but gut feelings arent often wrong and Id stay well clear.

Why can't you just live with LHD? There's a fair few of these things on the road over here nowadays, so they can't be impossbile to live with.

I think if anything, you'll struggle more with the physical size of the thing when it comes to parking. Not the fact the wheel is on the other side.

Its the Mrs to be who is anti LHD. I'm gathering ammo to talk her round to leaving it std LHD as everyone who has commented here and on other forums is of the opinion that the workmanship is shonky on all the conversions. The 2 places I have visited were dreadful...I wouldn't let them near my lawnmower!

I'm erring towards an F450 as the new powerstroke motor is getting rave reviews. Just got to get my Class 1 now as I'm wanting to pull a 10 ton 45ft 5th wheel trailer/toy hauler with it.

i work for performax international over here in oz and we convert from left to right hand drive, there are some real shite conversions out there tbh we get loads in with wireing faults stearing issue's and a host of other shite to, have a look at the place converting them and ask for a look round a conversion being done. we do new and used trucks mainley chev trucks, hummers corvettes and mustangs, i do the QA for them when i'm not doing development work. i have just made a right hand dash for the 08 h2 hummer a tw@t of a job tbh not just the dash but all the inside stuff door panels switch gear, shifter and console so there is a bit to it if you want a nice job. we reprogram all the switchs and convert them to. the heater box and AC also all the pipe work it's a big job but defo worth it. my next job will be to remake a dash for the 09 mustang so i'm told and that looks fun lol

Your Mrs is worried about LHD but NOT worried about puling a 10 ton 45ft trailer.
And she's hardly likely to be dashing backwards and forwards to Tesco in it.
Has she seen how big they are?

Tell her it's not so far to walk back to the pavement and a lot easier to parallel park. (don't mention the bit about getting the car /van back out again)

Stay with LHD, your hardly going to be dodging in and out of traffic with a Ram or a F450.

Some of the LHD conversions I've seen pics of don't look too bad but it's what you can't see that matters.

I've got a LHD Mustang and don't have any problems apart from car park pay barriers, but in a Ram or 450 you can walk from one side of the cab to the other.

Check out the "Conversion " of a Current shape Mustang;
Pics on second post down.

Thanks for the link badnews

LMAO @ Chevy Tahoe suggestion. They are not a very capable tow vehicle more of a Yank Range Rover.

One of these is the sort of thing I'm looking at

shame we don't do the ftrucks here they are awsome beasts the chev 350 duely is the bigest truck we do but they go very well. we have just put a lpg performance conversion on our work truck and it fooking flys. i think due to engineering and compliance the conversions are better over here due to being regulaterd and not back street if that makes any sence. the test's that are done are fully certified. when we do a new modle we strip a new truck to it's chassie then the body go's for seatbelt testing and they rip the fook out of the body to see how much it takes to destroy it. the seats are destruction tested along with a host of other stuff to. we are moving to plastic dash's and away from glassfiber to improve quality and get that factory look fit and feal and this is a real pain haveing to remake all the molds due to the injection molding process and shrink rate. best of luck finding a decent convertor in the uk

Convince her to stick to LHD, I had an F150 Lightning a few years ago and was worried about the whole LHD thing, after a few drives I actually prefered it!! People say your viewing is limited, pulling out etc... but you're so high up (moreso in a F450 as well) that it will be fine!!! Awesome trucks though, loved mine although fuel was awful!!! Im in NYC at the mo and seeing all the trucks they have here makes me want to get another one!

edit: just seen its an old old old post lol!!

Could you not get a RHD one from Australia? Would cost more to import yes but you would save on the cost of converting it.

Ah bumped a old thread. That's clearly a ford ka style, you can get one from your local vauxhall dealer.
