Default question for those who live and rent alone

will be renting my own place in the next few months, just wondered approximately what percentage of peoples wages they pay on rent? not sure how i should be budgeting really...

would 30% of what i take home per month be reasonable?

Depends what you earn and where you live.

There was a thread about this a while ago, i think the general consensus was £800 pcm all in, inc bills, phone, food etc

wont be in this area chip, im moving back to stoke when my parents emigrate in a few months. seen a few nice looking 2/3 bed houses in the right area with drives and one with garage for 375-400pcm.

tbh i dont know yet what im going to be earning, but unsure if after all bills etc ill be able to comfortably afford that, or if i should be looking at a flat/house share for less. obviously having never properly lived independantly im unsure on what stuff like utilities and council tax will tot upto ontop of rent.

*edit* i am trying to find someone to share with, but trying not to count on that as a certainty when im budgetting to begin with you know..

im not renting and i live with the wife, so not exactly what you're asking but just as a comparison... my half of the mortgage payment takes up about 25-30% of my monthly take home pay, not including other bills etc.

Bills on a place like that will be about 200 ish I expect mate, so you'd be looking at 600 or so all in.

Stu, make sure you try to secure work before you get here as jobs are thin round here especially if your looking at the bottom of the market. If you got needed skills you should be fine if your good in your game though.

thats my concern mate, i would have gone back into the building trade but its not really the right times to be rekindling a career down that road is it.

ive applied for a job at a place my mate works doing industrial climbing, hanging off pylons and chimney stacks etc. he says theyre desperate for people at the mo and arnt bothered about experience so i may have a chance with that. im keeping my fingers crossed, once fully qualified the money is very good.

yeah me too! i bumped into him while out on the piss a few weeks ago, asked what he was doing and he said that and i was really impressed! said id love to do something like that, and he said they were looking for people, so i applied! it involves intructing people aswell, i assume in house maintenance staff at tower blocks and the like.

mate around 800ish is the norm i would say, my bills are around that each month but i also rent a garage thats fucking expensive

chip renting a room in a house and renting a flat and totally different,, cant even be compared tbh and some people would rather be on there own than live with a stranger,,,,,, being able to drop you wallet on the sofa or leave your watch on the kitchen side is just a few of the benifits

ps: DONT WHAT EVER YOU DO TURN TO CHEEPO MICROWAVE MEALS,,, we did that, the shite in them is soo bad for you, always eat fresh fruit and veg with the evening meal, also taking lunch into work saves a fortune,, even when you aint trying too !!!

i bring my meals in from home due to the shite food options around my work, i also started drinking green tea,, i dont take a penny to work and due to this i aint seen a cashpoint for 2 weeks !!!!

i despise those instant meals. itll be fresh food all the way for me. doesnt mean it has to be expensive though, tuna, mince, potatos, pasta, rice and bog standard veg are all piss cheap really, the odd bit of garlic, chilli and herbs and spices and youre laughing.

i try not to buy stuff at work but its hard when your constantly driving past shops and stopping for fuel!
