Default Soldering (ARRRRRRRGH)

I've got a electric RC car because I fancies one over nitro and I'm trying to solder the wires to the motor. I've done the positive one fine but the negative...I won't even use words to describe it, these can do it for me:ang ry:

I know what the problem is, it's the SHIT surface I have to solder onto and the solder won't take to it I've cleaned it about 6 times and have chopped off about 2cm of wire as well just re-trying to solder and fuck knows how much solder as well! I'm using Deans racing pro-flux solder so I know it isn't my solder. ARRRRRRRGH! No mater how many times I clean the fucking thing the solder just won't take! I give up

I don't see any solution here if I can't get the solder to take.

i always dab on some extra plumbers flux even when using flux cored solder, failing that roughen the surface with a blade or wet n dry

As above roughen surface, then wipe with vinegar allow to dry, then will take no probs, I have this problem soldering onto galvanised surfaces.

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah it is a V2 motor so I've got about 5 square millimeters of space to solder onto which makes it worse!

I would take it mate, mine are excellent and I know them well but I ain't letting fucking soldering get the better of me!!! If it was something difficult I'd concede but don't want to concede soldering a wire to a motor

Strip end of wire, roll cable, "tin" the wire leaving a big bolb on the end, then re-melt the blob onto the connector

If that don't work and it still don't stick you're fucked

You come try it mate, if it works I'll give you the car for free as I've spent probably about 2-3 hours doing exactly that and it still don't take to the motor

Where do you live?

Other to try:

Leave tip of iron on the motor connector for 3-4seconds then solder it on, be careful the connector might melt the other end and come out though

Or just and rough it up with some sand paper

Or just a use a connector of some sort

The problem with the V2 motor is the alloy heatsink on the end, so it takes a real manly iron to heat them up. Personally I've always soldered a 2" piece of wire to the motor with my big iron in the house, then its just a case of soldering two wires together when I'm at racing, which doesnt require so much heat.

Will try tabetha's advice. If that don't work, the hobby shop can deal with it

Only thing with V2 endbells, you can't use connectors or clips (that I know of), you HAVE to solder straight on.

put the motor in a vice
put the iron on the underneath of the connection
clamp the wire on the top, pressing down with the solder on the other side of the clamp
once the connector is hot enough, the solder will melt onto everything, all you need to do is remove the clamp then

hard to describe but if i had a picture i'd show you what i meant

I know exactly what you mean Dojj, only two problems:

1) I don't have a vice
2) There is absolutely no chance in hell I can get the iron even with a bullet tip underneath the connector

Had plenty of expierence soldering these bastards

Just get the biggest hottest iron you can find and it will go on without any trouble.. no need to roughen up the surface really either from expierence

I've taken everyone's advice and I failed

I concede that I can't do it so off to LHS otherwise in the fucking bin! All this has achieved is remind me why I got into nitro

Bingo, this is whats needed mate
anything less than 60w is shit for RC stuff i find.

try a brushless RC motor, they have 3 thick power wires to solder on

I'm using a gas powered iron. It is having no trouble melting solder but because the cables are thick if I touch one end, it doesn't carry enough heat to melt solder on the other side of it. Anyway, I've conceded. The piss take is the other side was so easy to do! It was taunting me in the end, I could physically melt the solder and touch the wire onto it and push it onto the surface and it would solidify then when I took my hands off, off it came!!! and you could see the solder had melted to the shape of the surface but just won't stick!

just sounds like the iron isnt up to the job mate, i solder every day, pcbs, wires connectors etc, just sounds like a beefier iron is needed...not funny tho when things like that happen..

I hope it's just my iron mate, I really do cos if it ain't it means the endbell is scrap! I know my LHS use an 80W or 100W depending on what they need to solder so I'm hoping that they can do it!

me old mate 10th_racer on here used to be able to solder these in about 10 seconds..

100w iron with a big fat tip on it is the way to go for soldering these.. easy as pie.. or you could get just a brushless motor, one extra tab to solder but so so much easier. I manage just fine with a 45w iron
