Default Auto's

Right some of you may have seen my thread the other day about my bro-in law's vectra lunching it'self

He needs a replacement

Needs to be auto as he has spinabifida ( sp ) and cant do manuals, I know nowt about autos so whats relaible and whats not......doesnt need to be fast or showy but a good reliable motor.

Needs to be as new as poss, at least Focus sized and hopefilly with under 50K on the clock for £5k, £5.5 at an absolute push

What do you guys recommend?

The mother-in-law gave us her Audi A4 TDi auto when she emigrated - Was a good solid reliable car. Was a bit of a slug to drive at it was the 90bhp one, but would definitely recommend one for someone who wanted an A-to-B car.

My wife can only drive autos as well...... We stick with Vauxhalls and have been 100% reliable so far, some cars seem to suffer with really weak gear boxes when in automatic trim, Vauxhall seem to be pretty much bullet proof.
I even took my wifes Astra 1.8 16v round Bedford Autodrome last year.....lol

You can get a 2006 1.8 16v Astra for £5500 or a 2006/2007 1.9CDTi Vectra for around £5500

or any similar 3 or 5 Series. They're the ONLY cars I'd consider within those parameters

You won't be dissapointed with the autobox in a BMW providing you have at least the 2.5 litre engine - any smaller engine and its working hard all the time - the autobox in my 4.4 Sport is amazing, never thought I would like an Auto but I am delighted with it

I couldn't agree more with regards to engine size and auto box. I've had the pleasure of driving a Jeep Cherokee 4.0 and Honda Legend 3.2 and they're brilliant, just seamless power. I've also had the displeasure of driving an Astra 1.6, I'm still mentally scarred.
