I keep getting an error message come up when I try and open Outlook (Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 I think it is).
It says:
"Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The file C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst is not a personal folders file"
Google brings up plenty of articles regarding the solution, which involves going into control panel and then onto the "Mail" icon. One problem though. I do not have a "Mail" icon on my Control Panel!
So now where do I go?

MS outlook stores messages, calendar events, schedules and other objects in the PST (Personal Storage Table) file. .pst is the data file format used by it. This is Personal Storage File which retain all the data of this e-mail client.
The error messages, indicative of corruption, can shake the mind of user. One of such error messages is stated below:
“Unable to open your default email folders. The file D:…path to file…Outlook.pst is not a personal folders file”
After you click on the ‘OK’ button of this error message, the application will shut down.
This is the case when your PST has got corrupted and needs PST repair. MS outlook avails you the inbuilt utility, scanpst.exe, for this part which resolves many of the PST corruption issues.
You can find out more about this tool at the following URL :

Good old Microsoft rather than fix the issue they provide a tool to recover your screwed data
Remember to backup your data before screwing with it more than Microsoft have

You'll also hit this issue if the PST file is approaching 2GB in size. Outlook can't open files above this limit.
I'd suggest check the file size of the PST, if its under this size, then run scanpst see if it helps.
If the Mail icon is missing and your running Vista, make sure you are running in Classic view and then the icon should display. If your running a 64bit OS then you need to enable the 32 bit control panel using Additional Options->View x86 Control Panel menu.
From the mail icon, you can configure the PST's you wish to open (if you have to create a new one).
Regards
Matt

the only thing i have learnt from reading this post is that i'll leave it to the professionals
but that may explain also why the computer goes into bonkers mode when my mailbox goes beyond 32 mb as set by the company
