Need A New TV Cant Decide On LCD Or PLASMA
Been looking at getting a new tv today and had a good look around, seen a few i like but cant decide to go for an lcd tv or a plasma ill be going for a 37" or a 40" tv think a 42" may be to big as the room is quite small and sit quite close to the tv.I have a max budget of around £650 can anyone suggest a good tv to go for and it i sould go the lcd or plasma route.I quite like the look of Lg, sony and have heard panasonic plasmas are good.

The Panasonic TH3780B is a great Plasma and the Sony KDL40V4000 is a great LCD. That was the choice we had. I couldn't make up my mind between the Plasma and the LCD either, and with a similar budget to you.
EVERYONE said that the Panasonic was definately the one to go for, but I viewed it in several shops and I just wasn't inspired, so went with my gut-feeling rather than what others had said.
It was said that the Panasonic would win on Standard definition, which I think it true. However, I'd rather look at it from an HD point-of-view because thats surely where its all heading. We went for the Sony and don't regret it one bit. OK, so the Freeview picture isn't great, but on HD. Wowsers.
That KDL40V4000 is actually a £1000 set, but we paid £698 for ours with a Blu-Ray Player included and got John Lewis to pricematch giving us a 5-year warranty.
Winning deal I say!!

So on a 37" 0r a 40" set is it still best to go for a plasma as know with bigger sets like 47" or 50" people normally say plasma. There seems to be alot more choice with lcd than plasma also around this size tv.

i have 4 Samsung tv's, all been very good, i got one of the sumsung 50" plasmas in the sale last week, i was going to get one in November but couldn't warrant it then, as Christian said, a lot of people told me to go for panasonic but i didn't like the look of it, mainly the foot/stand, very happy with the 50" we got

Crackin' deal.
You can get the tv from M&S for £599 with a 5 year guarantee, and from Amazon for £559 with just a 1 year guarentee I think.
I recently got a Sony 32" for £342, and a week later I could have got a Panasonic 32" for £342. I much prefer the Panasonic, but the Sony is still excellent.

i also have a 40" samsung lcd. I had mine with theatre surround sound and stand 12 months ago for 999. Carl you got a good deal there fella.
The way it was explained to me was that plasma was better for action ie footbal etc but dont last as long as lcd as someone else has pointed out.
I was only told this by the sales guys at Currys.

You'll probably find figures in the 100,000 hours for Plasma. However, that's if you run it in properly. Not doing so will reduce this time.
as ever.
Look for FULL 1080. Not just HD ready (720) Look for 100Hz processing (or you get blurry images) and set it up properly to get the best picture. Also use the HDMI ports NOT Scarts if possible.

It depends on what you want from it, and what type of viewing you intend to be doing on it.
Plasma is typically better for SD than LCD is. SD looks "softer" and more natural on a plasma than it can on most LCD's, where SD stuff like Freeview and (non-HD) Sky can come off a tad harsh and crisp. LCD also suffers from motion blur more so than plasma. Not so much in terms of response time, but more so you can get "jaggies" - like watching a footballer run across the screen, you can see a "jagged" trail behind him pr the ball. This is generally less noticeable on plasma. Plasma is probably closer to CRT in this respect than LCD is (and CRT is still the best you will get for SD picture representation)
CRT still wins in terms of black levels aswell. Out of the two flat panel formats, plasma's again are typically better at handeling "true" blacks over LCD
On HD tho, it's a much different story. It's so hard to claim a clear winner in terms of which technology handles HD better. I was standing in a TV store the other day watching about 20 varying sized LCD's and Plasma's all showing the same BBC-HD prgramme and it was so hard to decide which was better. Probably didn't help that I'd bet most of the TV's hadn't been set up to show their best aspects, in terms of colour, brightness, contrast, etc etc, but many were indistinguishable(sp) even tho some were LCD and some were plasma!
I'm still on a CRT. I would LOVE a bigger TV (really wanna move up from 36" to a 50") but I only really watch SD content (Freeview, regular DVD and mainly SD movies from my PC) and I really can't justify spending between £500 and £1000 for a 50" TV that, as much as it is "advanced" technology, won't actually look as good as my CRT! The only HD stuff I could get would be the very limited HD channels on Freesat (really not interested in Sky or VM TV) and maybe Blu-Ray should I get a PS3. I could run some HD movies from my PC, but I'd probably have to upgrade it as a 1.8 P4 with 128mb of RAM isn't really gonna be able to handle 1080p video files very well

i have both , a 50" plasma,, you realy dont want to be sat too close, films and so on are top notch but the footy is a bit strange when the players are small , close up is superb and the heat off it , jesus i could have saved on the radiator in the extension lol.
The 37" lcd seems to have a crisper picture, but not life like , if you get my drift.
Hard to choose between em
